Terps Lose Heartbreaker To Northwestern In Extra Innings, 6-5

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – Northwestern's Tyler Ganus hit the go-ahead and eventual game-winning home run in Maryland baseball's 6-5 loss in 10 innings at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Friday. Maryland is now 13-13 overall and 2-5 in Big Ten action. 

Ganus' homer occurred in the top of the 10th inning. Maryland had one final chance to keep the game going but couldn't get a runner on base in the bottom of the inning. 

VCU transfer Aden Hill drove in the previous go-ahead run for the Terps in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Maryland and Northwestern (11-12, 4-3 Big Ten) were tied at 3-3. The Terps later increased their lead on a pitch clock violation. However, the Wildcats' Trent Liolios sent the game to extras with a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Elijah Lambros also robbed a home run in the inning to keep the game tied. 
  Hill has six home runs this season, matching his career-best for a single season set last year at VCU. He has 12 homers in his career overall.   

The home run was one of two hit by the Terps in the game, comprising four of Maryland's five runs. Hollis Porter went yard in the third inning, as the Terps took the lead after trailing 2-0. It was his tenth homer overall this season. Porter also has five home runs in his last seven games. 
  Kyle McCoy made his seventh start of the season. He pitched six innings, allowing only two runs and striking out three batters. Cristofer Cespedes pitched two innings of relief, surrendering one earned run on two hits.

  • Northwestern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
  • The Terps responded in the third, taking a 3-2 lead. Hollis Porter belted a three-run shot to right center.
  • The Wildcats tied the game at three apiece in the seventh on a defensive error. The baserunner barely avoided the tag at home plate by Alex Calarco
  • Aden Hill quickly put the Terps back in front, 3-2, with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. He was the first batter of the inning. 
  • Chris Hacopian scored a run in the eighth as Northwestern received a pitch clock violation. Maryland led 5-3 entering the ninth. 
  • Northwestern hit a two-run home run in the ninth to tie the game at 5-5. 
  • Elijah Lambros robbed a home run in center field, and the Teprs got the runner out at first base to end the top of the ninth.
