Timely Hitting Leads Terps Past Georgia Southern, 5-1

STATESBORO, GA – Sam Bean drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-RBI double in the top of the sixth inning as Maryland softball defeated Georgia Southern, 5-1, to wrap up its play in the Hail Southern Classic at Eagle Field on Saturday. The Terps are 10-11 and went 3-1 overall in the tournament, sweeping Rider and splitting their matchups with Georgia Southern. 

Maryland trailed 1-0 entering the sixth, but Matti Benson doubled to center field to drive in its first run and tied the game. Bean's double then gave the Terps a 3-1 lead, and Sammi Woods and Madison Runyan tacked on two more runs for insurance with RBI singles. Maryland scored all its runs in the sixth inning.  

  Bri Godfrey pitched earned her second win of the season and the sixth of her career overall. She pitched her third career complete game, striking out four batters and surrendering just one run on two hits. 

Caitlyn Cornwell (3-for-4), Benson (2-for-3) and Woods (2-for-3) all recorded multiple hits. This was Cornwell's first career game with three or more hits. Cornwell and Benson both came around to score a run. The Terps outhit the Eagles 10-2. 

Georgia Southern 13-9 scored its lone run in the third inning. 

 
Breaking Down The Action
  • Georgia Southern loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with one out, but Bri Godrey got out of the jam by allowing just one run. The Eagles led 1-0. 
  • Godfrey pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning as the Terps trailed 1-0 entering the top of the fifth. 
  • In the top of the sixth, Matti Benson doubled to center field to drive in its first run and tied the game. Sam Bean followed with a double that gave the Terps a 3-1 lead, and Sammi Woods and Madison Runyan tacked on two more runs for insurance with RBI singles. Maryland led 5-1. 
  • Bri Godfrey recorded the final three outs in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
