Terps Lose Series Finale To Hawkeyes, 7-2

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland softball was defeated by Iowa, 7-2, at Maryland Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Maryland is now 15-24 overall and 3-12 in Big Ten play. 

Iowa (24-15, 6-6 Big Ten) scored one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings before plating two in the sixth and seventh. Sydney Lewis and Taylor Borovac drove in Maryland's runs. Lewis did so with a solo homer in the fifth. It was the 15 home run of her career and ninth of the season. Lewis went 2-for-3, also hitting a single. 
  Borovac, a freshman, drove in her run with an RBI single in the sixth. Sammi Woods, Madison Runyan and Julia Shearer also recorded hits in the contest. Shearer went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Woods went 2-for-4. 

Bucher earned the start in the circle, making her second appearance on the weekend overall. She went 5.2 innings and struck out one batter. Shearer pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.  
  Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps allowed a runner to reach third base, but Keira Bucher recorded the final out and didn't allow the run to score. 
  • Bucher pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the second.
  • Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the third, hitting a RBI sac fly.
  • The Hawkeyes added a run in the fourth.
  • The Terps put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth but could not bring either of the runs home. 
  • Iowa extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth, plating a runner home on a RBI groundout.
  • Sydney Lewis put the Terps on board in the fifth, hitting a solo shot to center field.
  • Iowa led 5-1 in the top of the sixth after adding a RBI single.
  • Taylor Borovac hit an RBI single in the bottom frame of the sixth, cutting the Hawkeyes' lead to 5-2.
  • Iowa added its final two runs in the seventh off a two-run home run.
