PHILADELPHIA – A pair of school records fell on Friday to highlight Maryland's performances at the Penn Relays. The Terps set new standards in the men's distance medley relay as well as the women's 4x400 meter relay, while Maryland also saw three other all-time top 10 performances on the day.
Eric Albright, Sam Ford, Max Worley, and Jack Barchet combined to finish 10th overall in the distance medley relay for a new program record time of 9 minutes, 39.29 seconds. That broke the previous record of 9:39.8 set back in 1976.
Soon to follow were the women's 4x400 meter relay team of Sam Payne, Lydia Robling, Kami Joi Hickson, and Maya Valmon who qualified for Saturday's finals with a time 3:35.38 and a 7th-place overall finish. The group previously had the fifth-fastest time in program history and bested the previous record of 3:35.90 which was set in 2019. This season Payne, Robling and Valmon have now been part of two of the three fastest 4x400 relay teams in program history.
The day started with the women's distance medley relay squad of Emmi Simon, Emma Pegg, Lucy Scothern, and Katie Altieri turning in the program's eight fastest time with a mark of 11:53.13 to finish 18th overall.
They were followed by the 4x100 relay team of Bryce Hatcher, Victoria Teasley, Jewel Ofotan, and Armanie Coleman who had the fourth-fastest time in program history clocking in at 45.67 seconds (16th overall).
Later in the afternoon, foursome pulled double duty in the 4x200 relay with Ofotan and Coleman switching the third and anchor legs from the 4x100. That resulted in an eighth-place showing for the quartet at 1:37.88 – just outside the program's all-time top 10 list.
The men's squad of Joshua Goffe, Tanner Leach, Roman Spikes, and DJ Tarver turned in the program's third fastest mark in the 4x200 relay at 1 minute, 25.55 seconds to finish 10th overall.
Goffe, Isaiah Chapman, Aaron Abedin, and Ford then closed out the day with a 15th-place showing in the 4x400 relay (3:11.12).
