MacFarlane Homers Twice In Loss To Penn State, 14-12

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Mazie MacFarlane homered twice in Maryland softball's 14-12 loss to Penn State in game two of its series at Maryland Softball Complex on Saturday. The Terps are now 17-27 overall and 3-15 in Big Ten play heading into game three on Sunday.

MacFarlane finished her outing 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs. Her first home run was a solo shot that got the Terps on the board in the bottom of the first. Her second was in the third, putting Maryland ahead 9-8. This was her second career multi-home run game, also hitting two in a game last season. MacFarlane has 14 career home runs, including 10 in two seasons as a Terp. She now has five home runs on the season.

The game featured several lead changes and other instances where the game was tied, but Penn State (22-24, 8-10 Big Ten) scored three runs in the top of the fifth to lead 11-9 after previously trailing 9-8. It held onto the lead from that point on and added three insurance runs in the seventh in response to a sacrifice fly by Sam Bean in the bottom of the fifth to make it an 11-10 game.

Bean also later hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to make it a two-run game with no outs. However, the Terps couldn't send the game to extras or earn the walk-off in. The homer was her eighth of the season and 16th of her career.

MaFarlane was one of four Terps to drive in a run. Madison Runyan (3-for-3) recorded an RBI single, Mariah Penta (2-for-4) notched an RBI double and Julia Shearer (2-for-5) added an RBI single. Runyan set a new career-high with her three base hits, and Penta posted her first multi-hit game as a Terp.

Sammi Woods (3-for-4) made it five Terps to record multiple hits, as she accomplished the feat in back-to-back games. She matched her career-high of three hits, also scoring two of Maryland's runs.

Keira Bucher earned the start in the circle. She pitched four innings and struck out three batters. Julia Shearer pitched the remaining three innings. She struck out three batters in her outing.
