COLLEGE PARK, MD -- In 2019, Maryland Football Head Coach
Michael Locksley started a spring awards tradition that honors past Terrapin greats. At the conclusion of the Red-White Spring Game each season, Locksley hands out a variety of awards to current players. Each award will be named after a Terrapin legend with the award names changing each year. Here are this year's 17 awards.
Jermaine Carter Headhunter Award
Carter was a three-time All-Big Ten honoree along with being a Bednarik and Butkus Award Watch List honoree. A graduate of Friendship Collegiate Academy in Washington, D.C., Carter was drafted in the 5th round by the Carolina Panthers and was in the NFL with Carolina, Kansas City, Cleveland and Houston.
The Russ Weaver, I Like to Practice Award
Weaver left Maryland ranked fourth all-time in pass receptions and had more than 1,000 receiving yards in his career as a Terp. He was All-ACC in 1993 and 1994 and earned ACC Academic All-Conference both seasons.
The Andre Monroe Defensive Lineman Award
Monroe was a defensive lineman who was All-Big Ten in 2014. He was a freshman All-American in 2011 with the Terps. He finished his career with 121 tackles, including 38.5 TFLs and 25 sacks.
The Steve Ingram Offensive Lineman Award
Ingram was a Football News All-American in 1994 as an offensive tackle. He also earned All-ACC honors in 1993 and 1994. He went to be drafted into the NFL by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1995.
The Scott Milanovich Most Improved Freshman Award
Milanovich held most of Maryland passing records for 30 years. He threw for 7,301 career yards, 650 completions and 49 touchdowns. He was the MVP of the Blue-Gray Classic following his senior year in 1995. Milanovich went on to play in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Bucs and Cleveland Browns before a long career as a coach in the CFL and NFL.
The Nolan Carroll Community Service Award
Named for the cornerback who played for the Terps from 2005-09. Carroll was drafted in the fifth round by the Miami Dolphins in 2010 and played for Miami, Philadelphia and Dallas in the NFL with 284 career tackles.
The Mike Tice Most Improved Player Award
Tice was a college quarterback turned NFL tight end. He played for the Terps from 1977-80 before going on to a long career in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings, playing for 11 seasons. He spent 22 years, including four as a head coach in the league, leading the Vikings from 2002-05.
The Chet Hanulak Commitment to Excellence Award
Chet 'The Jet' was an All-American and helped the Terps to the 1953 National Championship. He still remains atop Maryland's all-time rushing list, averaging 8.13 yards a touch over his three seasons. He was also an All-Conference baseball player at Maryland in 1954. He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1954 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns (24th overall) and helped them to win the 1954 NFL Championship over the Detroit Lions.
The Tom Brown Leadership Award
Brown was a two-sport star at Maryland, who graduated in 1963. Brown is known for being a two-time Super Bowl winning professional football player and major league baseball player. He's the first athlete to win both a Super Bowl and hit a home run in a major league baseball game and the only one other than Deion Sanders to do so.
The Ty Johnson Offensive Back Award
Johnson is currently starring at running back for the Buffalo Bills. In four seasons with the Terps, Johnson tallied 4,196 all-purpose yards, third in program history. In his sophomore season in 2016, Johnson set the Terrapins' single-season yards per carry record, averaging 9.1 yards per rushing attempt.
The Michael Dunn Outstanding Non-Scholarship Player Award
Dunn is currently an offensive lineman with the Cleveland Browns. Dunn played with the Terps from 2012-16 - starting 37 consecutive games, earning All-Big Ten honors in 2015-16, before working his way to the NFL seeing time with the Los Angeles Rams, Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins, prior to his time with the Browns.
The Keeta Covington Defensive Back Award
Covington was a defensive back, who was an All-ACC honoree in 1985 and 1986. He was also the conference's leader in kickoff and punt return yards in a season in his time as a Terp. He led the ACC in interceptions and interception yardage as well in 1985. During his career, he accumulated the third most kick return yards in school history.
The Ratcliff Thomas Linebacker Award
Thomas became the first Terp to lead the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons from 1995-97. The linebacker recorded 427 career tackles, the then third-highest total in school history. He went on to play with the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots in the NFL.
The Jojo Walker Wide Receiver Award
Named for the late receiver, who passed away last year. Walker played for the Terps from 2002-03, playing in two bowl victories. He accumulated 76 career catches for 998 career receiving yards in his time as a Terp. He was also a kickoff and punt returner for Maryland.
The Brooks Barnard Special Teams Award
Barnard was an All-American punter and kicker with the Terps. He was named Freshman All-American in 1999 and then a consensus All-American in 2001. He also earned All-ACC honors in 2001 and 2002. He went on to play for the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers.
The Red-White Spring Game MVP
This award is voted on by the media and recognizes the player who stood out the most during Maryland's Spring Game.
The Ray Krouse Most Valuable Lineman
Krouse was a defensive lineman, who was an All-American in 1949 and went on to win three NFL Championships with the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Colts in 1957, 1958 and 1959. A member of the Maryland Hall of Fame, Ray played 118 games in the NFL before passing away at the age of 39 in 1966 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This award is voted on at the conclusion of the spring game by the media.
