- The Terps enter the game with a 17-28 overall record and a 3-16 mark in Big Ten play. Maryland is coming off a tough weekend against Penn State, dropping all three games. In the opener, the Terps tied the game at 2-2 after a Sammi Woods home run, but Penn State answered with eight unanswered runs to secure a 10-2 win. In game two, Mazie MacFarlane homered twice and Sam Bean added a two-run homer, but Maryland fell in a 14-12 shootout. Five Terps recorded multi-hit games in the loss. In the Senior Day finale, MacFarlane and Bean combined for five runs, but an early seven-run inning by Penn State was too much to overcome in a 12-8 defeat. Despite strong performances from Julia Shearer, Sydney Lewis, and others, the Terps were unable to erase early deficits across the series.
- Howard enters the matchup with a 26-17 overall record and a 20-1 mark in MEAC play. The Bison are riding a 15-game winning streak after sweeping Norfolk State (10-2, 7-3, and 17-4) this past weekend.
- Offensively, Alyssa Vasquez leads Howard with a team-high 40 hits, 26 RBIs, 10 doubles, and 4 triples while batting .374. Kenna Higa is batting a team-best .400 and leads the Bison with three home runs.
- In the circle, Julia Holt has made a team-high 29 appearances, posting a 4.35 ERA and 83 strikeouts.
- Maryland and Howard have met nine times since 2009, with the Terps holding a perfect 9-0 record in the series. Their last meeting came in 2014, a 15-0 win for Maryland in College Park.
Terps fell to Penn State in all three games of the series.
b1g Selections leaving their mark
- 2024 All-Big Ten Second Team honorees Mazie MacFarlane and Sydney Lewis have continued to shine in 2025.
- MacFarlane ranks second on the team with a .321 batting average and leads Maryland in both hits (44) and doubles (15). She starred against Penn State, going 5-for-6 with two home runs, two doubles, and three RBIs out of the leadoff spot.
- Lewis has already surpassed her home run total from last season, tallying nine so far in 2025. She ranks third on the team in batting average (.318), second in hits (41), and first in RBIs (36). She showcased her power earlier this season with a first-inning homer against Indiana.
MacFarlane hit two home runs and two doubles against Penn State.
Sam bean's Breakout season
- Graduate catcher Sam Bean has made a major impact in her first full season with Maryland after missing 2024 due to injury. The Rockwall, Texas native is second on the team with 32 RBIs and has hit a career-best seven home runs this season.
- Bean's standout performance came in a win over Purdue, where she launched two two-run home runs and tallied a career-high four RBIs. Against Penn State, she continued her strong play, combining for five RBIs across the final two games of the series.
Sam Bean has a career-high eight home runs this season.
