Terps Roll Past Howard, 9-2

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Seven players drove in at least one run in Maryland softball's 9-2 win over in-state foe Howard in its final home game of the regular season at the Maryland Softball Complex on Tuesday evening. The Terps ended the Bisons' 15-game winning streak and improved to 18-28 on the season.

Mazie MacFarlane, Sammi Woods, Sydney Lewis, Madison Runyan, Sam Bean, Julia Shearer, and Matti Benson all drove in at least one run to help Maryland jump out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first and sustain its lead throughout the entirety of the contest. Howard (26-18) scored two runs in the top of the second and fifth innings.
  Bri Godfrey made her 14th start in the circle this season, pitching her fifth complete game and earning her sixth win of the season. She pitched in all seven innings, allowing only two runs on three hits. She also struck out six batters. Godfrey has seven complete games in her career and 15 wins, including five from her 2023 season at Marshall. 

Lewis and Shearer drove in multiple runs, each plating two. Lewis hit a solo home run in the sixth. It was her 16th career home run and team-leading 10th of the season.   
  MacFarlane (2-for-3), Woods (3-for-4), Shearer (2-for-3), and Lewis (3-for-4) were Terps with multiple hits. Woods and Lewis matched their career-highs with three hits. MacFarlane and Woods also led the Terps, each scoring two runs. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • Bri Godrey opened the game with a 1-2-3 inning and struck out a batter.
  • The Terps took an opening-inning 4-0 lead. The inning featured an RBI bunt single by Sammi Woods, Madison Runyan drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and Julia Shearer hit a two-run RBI single.
  • Howard scored its first run on a fielding error in the second. However, Godfrey escaped the inning, stranding two runners in scoring position.
  • Maryland added three runs in the bottom frame of the second. Sydney Lewis hit an RBI single through left field. Sam Bean was hit by a ball with the bases loaded, and Matti Benson hit a RBI sacrifice fly.
  • Godfrey retired the frame 1-2-3 for the second time.
  • The Terps led 8-1 entering the fourth. Mazie MacFarlene hit a sacrifice fly, driving in Caitlyn Cornwell to home plate. Cornwell led off the inning with a triple. 
  • The Bison added a run in the top of the fifth, hitting an RBI double.
  • Lewis drilled a solo shot to right center in the sixth, and Maryland led 9-2.
  • Godfrey retired the final three batters in the seventh inning to secure the victory for Maryland.
