Terrapins Set for WNBA Opening Day

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Five Maryland women's basketball alums are on WNBA rosters for the league's Opening Day Friday. 

Kaila Charles (Dallas Wings), Brionna Jones (Atlanta Dream), Diamond Miller (Minnesota Lynx), Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (Atlanta Dream) and Alyssa Thomas (Phoenix Mercury) will open their seasons this weekend. Game times and television info below and fans can click HERE for a full schedule.

FRIDAY, MAY 16
Dream at Mystics: 7:30 p.m. (ION/League Pass)
Lynx at Wings: 7:30 p.m. (ION/League Pass)

SATURDAY, MAY 17
Storm at Mercury: 10 p.m. (League Pass)

Last season, Thomas was named a WNBA All-Star for the fifth time in her career. She was also named to the All-WNBA First Team and All-Defensive Team and is the league's all-time leader in triple-doubles. Last August, she helped Team USA take gold at the Paris Olympics and was inducted into the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame in October.

Jones has earned All-Star honors three times, including last season, and was named the league's Most Improved Player in 2021. Walker-Kimbrough helped the Mystics to a WNBA title in 2019. This past winter, Walker-Kimbrough played together in Poland. Charles played in Hungary this winter. 

Twenty-three Terrapins have been drafted into the WNBA, including 17 under head coach Brenda Frese. Nine of Frese's former Terps were selected in the top 10, most recently Diamond Miller as the second overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft.
