Terps Lose Game Two At No. 20 Nebraska, 9-2

LINCOLN, NE – Maryland softball was defeated by No. 20 Nebraska in game two of its regular-season series finale, 9-2, at Bowlin Stadium on Saturday. The Terps are now 18-30 overall and 3-18 in Big Ten play heading into their regular season finale tomorrow, May 4. 

Maryland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Matti Benson drove in two runs after a fielding error by a Nebraska defender. However, the Huskers (37-12, 16-5 Big Ten) scored nine unanswered runs. Maryland consistently put runners on base, but left nine runners stranded. 

Despite the loss, the Terps posted a valiant hitting effort. Mazie MacFarlane and Julia Shearer recorded multiple hits. Macfarlane went 2-for-3 with a walk. Shearer went 2-for-3. Overall, five Terps recorded a hit in the contest.  

Keira Bucher earned the start and pitched 3.2 innings. She allowed five runs on six hits while striking out a batter. Bri Godfrey pitched the remaining 2.1 innings, also striking out a batter. She surrendered four runs on five hits.  

  Breaking Down The Action
  • Matti Benson drove in two runs on a fielding error by a Husker infielder, and Maryland led 2-0 entering the bottom of the first. 
  • Nebraska cut the lead in half, 2-1, with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
  • The Terps put a runner in scoring position after Mazie MacFarlane recorded her second hit in the second inning, but couldn't plate the runner.  
  • Keria Bucher pitched a 1-2-3 inning to get out of the second.
  • The Huskers led 5-2 after scoring four runs in the fourth. 
  • Nebraska added two runs in the fifth to lead 7-2. 
  • The Husklers plated another two runs in the sixth to lead 9-2.
