Maryland Track and Field Head Coach Andrew Valmon Signs Contract Extension

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland track and field head coach Andrew Valmon has signed a contract extension through June 2028, as announced by Jim Smith, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics.

Valmon is entering his 23rd season at the helm of the Maryland track and field programs in 2025-26. His experience as an Olympic Gold Medalist, combined with 29 years of collegiate coaching and an expanding experience on the international level, has helped bring Maryland's cross country and track programs to prominence.
Being able to nurture and educate our student-athletes both in and away from competitions is something that means a lot to me. I look forward to a bright future with all of our programs. Exciting times are ahead for Maryland track and field and cross country.
On the track, Valmon has spent his time producing multiple All-Americans. During his tenure, 59 student-athletes have earned All-America honors for their performances on the national stage. In addition, nearly 60 school records have been established. In the classroom, Maryland track and field athletes consistently rank among the top of their peers, with the men's and women's programs earning the school's award for the highest team GPA several times each.

"We are thrilled to extend Coach Valmon's contract and continue building on the strong foundation he's established within our track and field programs for more than two decades," said Smith. "His commitment to excellence, both on the track and in the development of our student-athletes, has been instrumental in elevating Maryland's competitive profile nationally. We look forward to the continued growth of the programs under his leadership."

Exciting times are ahead for Maryland track and field and cross country."

This past season, the Terps set 15 school records under Valmon's leadership. The cross country season was highlighted by Rose Coats reaching the NCAA Championship, where she turned in the third-best individual finish in program history. During the outdoor season, Chioma Njoku became the third Terp to earn All-America accolades in as many years as she captured second-team honors in the hammer throw. Maryland also had nine student-athletes named CSC Academic All-District and eight named to the USTFCCA All-Academic Team.

Overall, Maryland has been represented in the men's and women's NCAA Championships 42 times during Valmon's tenure. He has also helped produce three Olympians, including 2024 Gold Medalist Thea Lafond.
