COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland continues its 2025 season with its Big Ten opener on the road at Wisconsin on Saturday, September 20th. Kickoff is set for noon ET, with live coverage on NBC and the Maryland Sports Radio Network. 
a Strong start thanks to strong starts
  • Maryland extended its winning streak against non-conference opponents to 18 games, the longest active streak in the nation with a 44-17 win over Towson last Saturday.
  • The Terps are 3-0 to start the season for the fourth time in the last five years. They are tied for second in the country for the most 3-0 starts since 2021. They trail Georgia, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, and Rutgers with five and are tied with Ohio State and Oregon.
  • Maryland has scored 30 or more points in the first half twice this season, 34 vs. Towson and 33 vs. Florida Atlantic, marking the first time since 2019 (56 vs. Howard; 42 vs. Syracuse) they've done so multiple times in a season.
  • Defensively, Maryland has allowed just 33 total points through three games, the program's fewest through three games since 2001.
  • Maryland is one of two Big Ten teams this season to not allow a score on the opening possession of the first or second half. Penn State is the other.
  • Against Towson, Maryland scored on its first six offensive drives and forced three consecutive 3-and-outs on defense to open the game.
  • The Terps' 34 first-half points vs. Towson were their most in a first half since 2022, when they scored 35 against Charlotte.

Series History: Maryland vs. Wisconsin
  • Maryland and Wisconsin will meet for the fifth time in series history, with the Badgers holding a 4-0 all-time advantage. 
  • The Terrapins have rushed for at least 100 yards in each of their last three games against Wisconsin, tied for their second-longest active streak against a conference opponent.
  • The two teams last faced off on November 5, 2022, in Madison, where Wisconsin claimed a 23-10 win at Camp Randall Stadium.

MALIK Washington Off to Historic Start
  • Quarterback Malik Washington leads all FBS true freshmen with 773 passing yards and six touchdowns through three games. He is just the third Maryland quarterback in the last 30 seasons to reach both marks after three games, joining: Taulia Tagovailoa (2021), and C.J. Brown (2013).
  • Washington's 773 yards are the most-most by a true freshman through three career games in a Power Conference since 2018. The last true freshman playing in Power 5 football to have more passing yards through three games were Texas Tech's Alan Bowman (1160), Wake Forest's Sam Hartman (834), and USC's JT Daniels (819), all in the 2018 season.
  • Washington is just the the second Power Conference quarterback to throw for six touchdowns through three games since 2019. Only Dante Moore (7) threw for more through three games with UCLA in 2023. He is tied with Cal's Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (2025), Vanderbilt's AJ Swann (2022), USC's Jaxson Dart (2021), and UNC's Sam Howell (2019).
  • Malik Washington and Christian Hackenberg (Penn State, 2013) are the only two Big Ten quarterbacks since 1996 to throw for 250 or more yards in each of their first three career games.
  • Malik Washington is the first Maryland QB to throw for 250+ yards in each of his first three career starts since Scott Milanovich in 1993.
  • Malik Washington attempted 96 passes before throwing his first-career interception,the longest streak by a Terp since Danny O'Brien's streak in 2010.
  • Malik Washington averaged 11.86 passing yards per attempt in Saturday's win, the highest yards per attempt by any Maryland true freshman in a game over the last 30 seasons (minimum 20 attempts).

 Defensive dominance 
  • Maryland's scoring defense ranks 20th nationally, allowing just 11.0 points per game.
  • The Terps are tied for second nationally with a +6 turnover margin and first in turnovers gained with eight.
  • Maryland ranks second nationally in red zone defense, trailing only Ohio State. Opponents have only scored 42.9% of the time they've been in Maryland's red zone and only once have the Terps given up a touchdown.
  • The Terps have recorded seven interceptions this season, the most in the FBS. Only four Big Ten teams have led the FBS in defensive interceptions over the last 30 seasons (2022 Illinois, 2021 Iowa and 2017 Iowa).
  • La'Khi Roland had a 100-yard pick-six in the Terps' win over Towson on Saturday, the longest interception returned for a TD by any Maryland player over the last 60 seasons since Tom Brown did it in 1962. Roland is one of four Big Ten players this century to record a 100-yard pick-six (Charles Brantley, John Torchio and Will Allen).

  • Maryland ranks 10th nationally and second in the Big Ten in team sacks, with 10 so far this season, tied with Illinois.
  • Sidney Stewart is tied for second in the Big Ten and 14th nationally in sacks per game, with three so far this season.
  • Stewart also leads the Big Ten and ranks ninth nationally in tackles for loss per game

WR Standouts
  • Senior WR Shaleak Knotts recorded a career-high 79 receiving yards against Towson and became the first Maryland receiver since Tai Felton (2024) to catch a touchdown in three consecutive games.
  • Senior WR Jalil Farooq surpassed the 100-career reception mark and now has 103 career catches.
  • Senior WR Octavian Smith Jr. posted a career-high 103 receiving yards in the win over Towson.
  • Maryland's senior receivers have combined for 501 receiving yards this season, the most of any senior class in the Big Ten. Knotts' 196 receiving yards this season are third most by a Big Ten senior  behind Illinois' Hank Beatty with 289 and Rutgers' DT Sheffield with 201.

Terps On the Ground
  • Maryland rushed for a season-high 152 yards in its last game against Towson.
  • Nolan Ray, DeJuan Williams, and Malik Washington each scored a rushing touchdown in the game. The last time Maryland had three different players score a rushing touchdown in a game was against Villanova on Sept. 21, 2024.
  • It was the third career rushing touchdown for Ray, the second for Williams, and the first for Washington.
  • True freshman Iverson Howard led the team with 15 carries and 60 rushing yards.
