Maryland Tennis Opens Fall Play This Weekend

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The University of Maryland's Women's Tennis team will begin its fall season at home, hosting the Bedford Cup at the JTCC in College Park this Friday, September 19, through Sunday, September 21.

In addition, the ITA All-Americans Championship will also begin this weekend in Cary, North Carolina, on Saturday, September 20, and conclude on Sunday, September 28.

The Terps will be split up between both tournaments over the weekend. Representing the Terps for the Bedford Cup will be Juniors Aida Eissa and Katherine Hung. The pair participated in this event in 2024, going 3-1 in doubles play. The Bedford Cup will host schools from all over the DMV, including Loyola, Towson, Coppin State, West Virginia, VCU, GW, Delaware State, Johns Hopkins, Morgan State, Norfolk State, and George Mason.

Traveling to Cary for the Terps will be Ema Kovacevic, Ema Ghiradato, and Oliwia Orlinska. All three will be participating in the pre-qualifying draw starting Saturday, and the pair of Kovacevic and Ghiradato will be playing the doubles qualifying draw starting on Monday. The All-American Championships is the first tournament of the year that is part of the NCAA Fall Singles and Doubles Championships pathway.

"We've had a great start to the semester so far." Said head coach Katie Dougherty, entering her 7th season as the Terps head coach. "The team came back in great shape and ready to go. We're excited to start competing and see where we stand, putting the first couple of weeks of practice into action. Hosting teams from the DMV is something that is important to our program and JTCC and their mission.  Many of their alumni participate in the tournament from various schools in the DMV, and it's great for all of us to have these full-circle events."

The Terps hope to start the season strong with these two September events in their fall slate, as they gear up for the Cissey Leary Tournament in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, starting October 3rd.

Scoring updates will be posted on the team's X account.
