COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Redshirt senior wrestler Jaxon Smith announced Tuesday evening that he will pursue a medical redshirt for the 2025–26 season due to an ankle injury.
Smith, the Terrapins' first All-American since 2019 and just the 21st wrestler in program history to earn All-America honors, achieved the distinction during the 2024–25 season at 184 pounds. He began the year 5–0 before suffering the injury.
"After a lot of thought, prayer, and conversations with my coaches and medical team, I've decided to take a medical redshirt this season due to an ankle injury," Smith said. "While this isn't the season I envisioned for myself, my priority is getting fully healthy so I can come back stronger for the 2026–27 season.
"I'm grateful for all of the support from my teammates, coaches, trainers, family, and everyone who continues to believe in me. I'm excited for what's to come."
Head coach Alex Clemsen also released a statement regarding Smith's decision.
"Jaxon Smith has been the face of our program since the summer of '22," Clemsen said. "Losing him this year has been less than ideal. Seeing him battle through the injury, work to get back for a title run, and continue to lead this team has been extremely impressive. At some point, though, it becomes clear that pushing forward is not what's best for his short- or long-term health.
"With that said, we will be pursuing a medical waiver for Jaxon so he can return to College Park next year fully healthy and ready to compete at the highest level. We appreciate everyone who has poured into Jaxon's treatment and reached out with support. Having Jaxon back next year makes the future even brighter, and we can't wait to see him doing what he loves at the level he's truly capable of."
