Wrestling Completes the Southern Scuffle; Brown and John Place in the Top Three

CHATTANOOGA, TN- The Maryland Wrestling team completed their final tournament of the 2025-26 regular season at the Southern Scuffle. 

    Leading the way for the Terps was redshirt-senior Braxton Brown at 133, who wrestled his way to the finals. Brown opened with a technical fall over Logan Heil of Campbell (17–1, 3:53) in the Round of 32, followed by a 6–2 decision over Virginia's Kyle Montaperto in the Round of 16. He then edged Brett Ungar of Cornell 3–1 in the quarterfinals and earned a win by MFFL in the semifinals before coming up just short in the final five seconds of the championship bout, falling by a 5–4 decision to No. 16 Dom Serrano of Northern Colorado.

    Following was sophomore Branson John at 197, who placed third. John opened the tournament with a technical fall over Hunter Adams of App State (17–2, 1:42) in the Round of 32, followed by a 5–1 decision over Austin Johnson of Oklahoma State in the Round of 16. He continued his run with a 5–2 decision against No. 31 Andrew Reall of Brown in the quarterfinals before falling to No. 1 Josh Barr of Penn State by fall (12–4, 6:57) in the semifinals. John bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a 17–4 major decision over Kael Wisler of Michigan State and capped the tournament by winning the third-place match in sudden victory with a takedown over Brown's No. 31 Andrew Reall. 

    Midyear transfer and newest Terp Carter Young had a successful first outing, opening the tournament with a technical fall over Eli Murray of Duke (19–3, 3:23) in the Round of 64. He followed with a 17–4 major decision against Emilio Trujillo of Northern Colorado in the Round of 32 and another technical fall over Leo Maestas of American (17–2, 1:49) in the Round of 16. Young then earned a 7–5 decision over No. 8 Cross Wasilewski of Penn to advance before medically forfeiting and finishing sixth overall.

    Nine other Terps competed at the Southern Scuffle, with full results listed below.

    The Terps are back in action this Friday as they open Big Ten competition against Northwestern at 8 p.m. ET.
