COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Maryland Terrapins had three players featured on the Big Ten Baseball Players To Watch List with them being
Ty Kaunas,
David Mendez and
Lance Williams.
Ty Kaunas was ranked the #13 player and #3 shortstop out of Maryland by Perfect Game. He was named the Just Baseball's Preseason Big Ten Freshman of the Year entering the 2026 campaign. The shortstop hit .400 with six homers in the fall. One of those came in the exhibition against St. John's when he banged a hanging curve for a three-run shot. It was one of multiple triple-digit velocities he produced while enjoying a three-hit game.
David Mendez comes to Maryland after spending his freshman season at Dayton and his sophomore season at Vanderbilt in 2025. At Dayton, Mendez was First-Team NCBWA Freshman All-America, Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and All-Rookie Team. The infielder led all A-10 freshmen in average, OBP, runs, RBI, triples and stolen bases as he finished 2024 with a .342 average, .442 OBP, 49 RBI, 47 runs, nine doubles, two triples and six home runs. Mendez recorded 24 at bats at Vanderbilt in 2025 with one home run.
Lance Williams, who is expected to be Maryland's Friday night ace, posted a 5.31 ERA in 25 appearances with eight starts in 2025 at East Carolina. He held opposing batters to a .245 batting average over 40.2 innings pitched with a 3-1 record. Williams' best performances of the season came when he posted a season-high five strikeouts in four scoreless innings vs. Coastal Carolina (3/9) and tossed four scoreless innings at South Florida (5/15).
