GREENVILLE, NC — Maryland fell to Notre Dame, 5-2, in the Terps' second game of the Purple-Gold Classic on Friday. The Fighting Irish jumped out to an early lead and outlasted the Terps (3-4) on the back of a complete-game pitching performance.
Caitlin Olensky made her second start of the day in the circle for the Terps. A pair of early Maryland errors brought an unearned Notre Dame run across in the bottom of the first inning as the Fighting Irish opened an early 1-0 lead. Notre Dame's Brianne Weiss was strong in the circle for the Fighting Irish. She retired the first 10 Terps she faced in her complete-game, two-run outing. Ana McGowan finally got to her in the sixth inning, keeping her hot start to the season rolling with an RBI single to left field to drive in the Terps first run. Sammi Woods led the Terps' offense with a pair of hits in the loss.
Elisea Wiegand took over in the circle in the fifth inning and threw a scoreless frame, but Notre Dame tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
