Pitching Shines In 5-1 Win Over CSU Bakersfield

Caitlin Olensky kept the Roadrunners at bay in Maryland's first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

ORLANDO, FL — Maryland's pitching staff dazzled as the Terps held CSU Bakersfield to just four hits in their 5-1 win in the Black and Gold Classic. Caitlin Olensky threw four perfect innings while Sammi Woods drove in a pair of runs as Maryland moved to 2-1 on the season.

Olensky made her first start as a Terrapin in the circle on Saturday afternoon. The Nebraska transfer retired the first 12 batters she faced and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning in her impressive outing. She finished with three strikeouts and allowed just one run on two hits across five stellar innings of work.  The Terps pushed the game's first run across in the bottom of the third inning. Sammi Woods singled before a walk brought her in scoring position. She came around on a Roadrunner throwing error to break the ice and put Maryland ahead 1-0.

Maryland expanded its lead with a three-run, five-hit fourth inning that featured RBI knocks from Caroline Fox, Matti Benson and Woods. The Terps' 3-0 lead after four innings was more than enough cushion for Olensky to work with. Woods added a sac-fly in the sixth for a late insurance run.  CSU Bakersfield finally got to Olensky in the fifth inning, tagging her for just one run on a pair of hits. A key strikeout from Olensky, however, left the bases juiced in the frame and the Terps comfortably ahead.

Elisea Wiegand took over in the circle in the top of the sixth for Maryland, and recorded the final six outs to clinch the Terps' second win of the season. Maryland is back in action in the Black and Gold Classic later Saturday night against UCF.
