Maryland Falls 15-7 To UCF In Saturday Slugfest

A nine-run fourth inning from the Knights lifted them past the Terps in the Black and Gold Classic.

ORLANDO, FL — Maryland was run-ruled by UCF, 15-7, late on Saturday night in the Black and Gold Classic. What started as a fantastic, back-and-forth affair quickly turned south for the Terps (2-2) as the Knights plated nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Maryland got after UCF starter Ava Stuewe early, tagging her for four runs in the first inning. The Terps loaded the bases to apply early pressure. A UCF blunder in the field brought home the game's first run before Mariah Penta plated a pair with a two-RBI single. Anna McGowan's third hit of Saturday's doubleheader brought a fourth run home as the Terps built an early lead.

Caroline Fox delivered a two-out, two-RBI double to the left-center gap in the top of the third inning to extend the Maryland lead to 6-3. She recorded her first multi-RBI game as a Terp, delivering from the nine-hole slot in the order.

UCF (3-1) seemed to always have a response for Maryland's early offensive bursts. A pair of two-run homers across the first three innings highlighted the Knights' rally that saw the contest tied 6-6 after the first three frames. The Terps did UCF some favors on Saturday as three errors led to six unearned Knights runs.

The Knights took a 10-7 lead on Kendall Yarnell's second grand slam of the young season. UCF scored nine runs in the fourth inning to claim the game's final advantage. The Knights had four players log multi-RBI games on Saturday night. The Terps get a chance at redemption against UCF again on Sunday at 1 PM.
