Terps’ Rally Comes Up Short in 8-6 Loss to Purdue

Bud Coombs drove in a pair of runs on Saturday.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Purdue jumped out to an early lead in Saturday's Big Ten clash. Maryland scored the final five runs, but couldn't come all the way back as the Boilermakers held on for the 8-6 win to drop the Terps to 10-8 on the season.

A seven-run second inning from Purdue put Maryland in an early hole. Five of the frame's runs were unearned as the Boilermakers tallied four hits in the frame.

David Mendez got the Terps' scoring started in the bottom of the first with a solo shot to left-center. His fourth of the season marked the first of Maryland's 11 hits on Saturday. Bud Coombs had a big day in his return to the lineup. He used an RBI double and a sacrifice fly to drive in a pair of runs and help Maryland work its way back into the contest.  Runners left on base cost the Terps on Saturday. Maryland pushed three runs across in the third and rallied with two in the seventh, but left 11 on base as the Terps' comeback came up short.

Brayden Ryan was elite out of the Terps' bullpen, throwing five scoreless frames to keep Purdue off the board from the third through eighth innings. He only relented two hits and fanned four across his stellar outing. Cristofer Cespedes threw a scoreless ninth, but Maryland was held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth.  How it Happened:
