Maryland Gymnastics Heads to Illinois for Big Ten Championships Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Maryland gymnastics team travels to Illinois for the Big Ten Championships, facing Penn State, Iowa and Ohio State in Session II on Saturday. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET. Fans can watch the competition on Big Ten Network and follow live updates on X at @TerpsGymnastics.
 
SETTING THE STAGE
  • The Maryland Terrapins open this week ranked No. 25 on NCAA vault.
  • Maryland will be competing in session II of the Big Ten Championships, hosted by Illinois in the State Farm Center. 
  • Maryland will be competing alongside Penn State, Iowa and Ohio State in the second session. 
  • Team seeding is determined by the final Big Ten regular season standings. In the event of a tie, head-to-head results shall be used. If there is still a tie, team NQS following the Big Four meets shall be used.
  • Maryland finished 1st at the George Washington Quad meet this past 196.100 showing. 
  • Maryland posted a 49.075 team score on floor on the back of Aine Reade's 9.900 mark and Maddie Komoroski's 9.875.
  • Aine Reade is ranked No.10 in the Big Ten on Floor. 
  • Maryland finished 12th, and scored 195.700 and placed fourth during session two at the Big Ten Championships at Crisler Center at University of Michigan last year.
  • Head Coach Brett Nelligan has surpassed 300 career wins.
  • Graduate student Josephine Kogler, Senior Maddie Komoroski, Senior Megan Bingham and senior Taylor Rech joined the Terrapins' 1,000-point club after their performances over the course of the season. Komoroski has been named as a 2026 AAI Award Nominee, an award given to the most outstanding collegiate senior gymnast. 
  • Maryland recorded the highest floor event score in program history against No. 17 Penn State on January 24 with a 49.575.

  • The score surpassed the previous program record of 49.550, set against Temple on March 10, 2000.

  • Taylor Rech and Komoroski were named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch entering the season.
  • The Terrapins opened the 2026 season after recording the best NCAA Regional performance in program history, scoring a 196.825 and placing fourth in Session II of the NCAA Pennsylvania Regional last April.
  • Maryland enters the meet with 11 new faces on the roster, including six freshmen and five transfers.
  • The Terrapins are led by head coach Brett Nelligan, who is in his 17th season at the helm of the program.
  • Nelligan signed a contract extension through June 2030, announced in August by Jim Smith, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics.

  • Nebraska, Washington, Illinois, and Rutgers will compete in Session I on March 20 at 6 p.m. CT.
  • UCLA, Michigan State, Michigan, and Minnesota will compete in Session III on March 21 at 5 p.m. CT.
  • Following the Big Ten Championships, Maryland will advance to NCAA Regionals.
  • The top 36 teams in the nation, based on National Qualifying Score (NQS), qualify for NCAA Regionals at four predetermined sites.
  • The top 12 all-around competitors and top 16 event specialists not on a qualifying team are also selected to compete individually at regionals.

Senior Maddie Komoroski was named a 2026 Big Ten Gymnast to Watch.

  • The Terps have welcomed five transfers this past offseason, bringing a new level of experience and talent to College Park.
  • Megan Bingham is a Second-Team All-Conference All-Around gymnast who achieved a career-high score of 9.950 on beam. She joins the Terps from Bowling Green State University and is now a senior, recording her highest score on beam this season in the lead-off spot, 9.850. Bingham has also surpassed 1,000 career points. 
  • Aine Reade earned First-Team All-Conference honors and was an eight-time Conference Rookie of the Week. She recorded a career-high 9.900 on floor and comes to Maryland from the University of New Hampshire as a sophomore. Reade marked a new career-high 9.975 on floor against Penn State this season. Reade is currently ranked No.10 in the Big Ten on floor. 
  • Chelsey Dennis is a First-Team All-Conference gymnast and two-time Conference Rookie Specialist of the Week. She posted a career-high 9.900 on balance beam while competing at Towson University and is now a junior. Dennis most recently posted a 9.825 season-high on bars against Penn State.
  • Katrina Mendez-Abolnik achieved a career-high score of 9.900 on vault, appeared in 10 of 12 meets in 2025 all on vault, and joins the Terps from Bowling Green State University as a graduate student. Mendez-Abolnik has been a force on vault in the anchor spot, posting a season-high of 9.850. 
  • Alexis Czarrunchick transferred from the University of Georgia and is now a sophomore. She was the state all-around runner-up in 2023 and previously trained at MG Elite.
