COLLEGE PARK, MD – Junior guard Oluchi Okananwa of the Maryland women's basketball team (23-8) earned All-America honorable mention honors from the Associated Press Wednesday. She was also named an All-America finalist by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
 
Okananwa led the Terrapins in scoring with 18 points per game and in steals with 2.3 per contest. She scored in double figures in 27 of 31 games and scored 20 or more points in 13 games. Earlier this year, Okananwa reached the 1,000 career-points mark and has 1,263 career points.
 
Okananwa averaged 17.8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in the Terps' 15 games vs. teams in the top 50 of the NET rankings. She leads all Big Ten guards in points in the paint (10.8) and leads all Big Ten players in fastbreak points (5.2). She was also second in the conference in free throws made (118), third in steals (71) and No. 8 in scoring (558).
 
Okananwa earned All-Big Ten First Team honors earlier this month.
 
Okananwa and No. 5-seeded Maryland will take on 12^th-seeded Murray State in the NCAA Tournament First Round Friday at 3 p.m. at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C. Friday's game will be televised on ESPNU. The winner will take on the winner of No. 4 seed North Carolina and No. 13 Western Illinois on Sunday at Carmichael Arena.
 
The Terrapins earned their 16th straight NCAA Tournament bid, dating back to 2011. This is the Terrapins' 22nd NCAA Tournament bid under head coach Brenda Frese in her 24 seasons in College Park. Under Frese, Maryland is 43-19 (.694) in the NCAA Tournament and 55-31 (.640) in 32 total appearances. The Terrapins have advanced to 12 Sweet Sixteens, seven Elite Eights, three Final Fours and the 2006 NCAA Championship under Frese.
 
NCAA Regionals will be played in Fort Worth, Texas and Sacramento, Calif. March 27-30. The Final Four is April 3-5 in Phoenix, Ariz.
