Terps’ Rally Falls Just Short in 11-10 Loss to No. 12 USC

Rylen Stockton and Ryan Costello both homered as Maryland scored the final eight runs of Friday’s game.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The early innings of Friday night's thriller hurt Maryland in its 11-10 loss to No. 12 at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Rylen Stockton and Ryan Costello both homered, but the Terps couldn't fully climb out of the hole and fell to 11-14 (1-6 Big Ten) in 2026. Command issues and a fielding error gave way to a four-run Trojans first inning that only featured one hit. Maryland loaded the bases with nobody out in the home half of the frame before David Mendez got the Terps on the board with an RBI single.

Maryland collected five hits and plated four runs against USC starter Mason Edwards. Both tallies marked season-highs allowed by the Trojans' ace as the Terps attempted to work back into Friday's clash.

A three-run seventh inning cut USC's lead to four runs as Stockton homered and Jackson Sirois plated two with the third of three consecutive hits with two outs.  Costello's team-leading 11th homer of the season made it an 11-9 game in the eighth before a wild pitch made it a one-run game headed into the ninth inning. Maryland scored the game's last eight runs thanks to an elite effort from the Terps' bullpen that included scoreless outings from Quinn Yellin, Peyton Mamula, and Austin Weiss. Ultimately, the Terps were unable to overcome USC's six-run third inning. The Trojans moved to 25-2 in 2026, including 9-1 in Big Ten play. Maryland gets another crack at USC on Saturday at 2 PM.
