
Ryan Costello Named Big Ten Freshman Of The Week

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- First baseman/outfielder Ryan Costello has been recognized as Big Ten Freshman of the Week after his electrifying week of performances.
Through the four game stretch, Costello totaled seven hits for a .438 batting average. Three of those hits being home runs, he also knocked a double for a total of four extra base hits and 17 total bases. He drove in a total of six runners through the week, as well as scoring six runs himself.
His most impactful performance of the week came against the Troy Trojans on Sunday, March 8, helping Maryland secure the series win. Trailing 4–0 in the top of the sixth, Costello ignited the Terps' rally with a solo home run to breathe life into the offense. Two innings later in the eighth, he worked a walk and later came around to score on a Rylen Stockton homer, trimming the deficit to one. Costello delivered the decisive blow in the top of the ninth, launching a two-run homer to give the Terps their first lead of the game. He finished the day with three runs scored and three RBI as Maryland rallied for a 7–6 victory, earning its 10th win of the season.
Costello leads all freshmen in the nation with nine home runs and ranks ninth nationally among all players. He also leads Big Ten freshmen in RBI and total bases with 27 and 51, respectively. Costello's 27 RBI ranks 12th in the nation. He is now hitting .328 with an impressive 1.224 OPS on the season.
