Two Freshmen Smack Homers In 5-2 Loss To Iowa

Ty Kaunas and Bud Coombs both left the yard in Saturday’s conference clash.

IOWA CITY, IA — Maryland and Iowa battled in the second game of their weekend series, but the Hawkeyes used a three-run fifth inning to earn a 5-2 win and drop the Terps to 18-21 (4-13 Big Ten) in 2026.

Bud Coombs left the yard for the third time in his career in the top of the sixth inning to get the Terps on the board. Maryland didn't have many answers for Iowa's pitching as the Terps collected seven hits but were limited to two runs.  Ty Kaunas ripped his fourth homer of the season to lead off the top of the ninth inning, but the rally fell short as Iowa improved to 21-15 (7-10) Big Ten in 2026. Already holding a 1-0 lead from an RBI single in the second inning, the Hawkeyes loaded the bases before an out was recorded in the fifth, giving way to a three-run, four-hit frame to take command of Saturday's contest.

Logan Hastings only allowed three earned runs across his five-inning outing as he kept his Terps in the ballgame. He collected four strikeouts and limited Iowa to six hits across his 100-pitch afternoon as the first of only Terps to toe the rubber as Cristofer Cespedes held Iowa to one run on two hits across his three-inning relief outing.  How It Happened:
  • T2: Rylen Stockton singled up the middle for the Terps' first hit.
  • B2: Iowa took a 1-0 lead with an RBI single.
  • T4: Brayden Martin singled to extend his on-base streak.
  • T5: David Mendez doubled to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

  • T6: Coombs' homer got the Terps on the board.
  • B6: Iowa regained a four-run advantage with an RBI double.
