Terps’ Hit Parade Lifts Maryland To 16-5 Win Over Iowa

David Mendez’s three-hit day highlighted the Terps’ winning effort on Sunday afternoon.

IOWA CITY, IA — Maryland smacked its way to a 16-5 win over Iowa to wrap up the weekend series on Sunday afternoon. David Mendez logged three hits and finished a home run shy of the cycle as the Terps moved to 19-21 (5-13 Big Ten) on the season.
Maryland did most of its damage in its seven-run seventh inning. The Terps opened the inning with five straight singles as Mendez and Devin Russell collected RBIs. Jordan Crosland drove a run home with a sacrifice-fly and Brayden Martin smacked an RBI double as the Terps brought 13 hitters to the plate in the game-sealing inning. Mendez and Nate Hawton-Henley used their hot bats to get the Terps on the board in the fourth inning. Mendez tripled to right to extend his hitting streak to 14 games before Hawton-Henley drove him in to mark his third RBI in his last four games. Maryland took its first lead in a four-run fifth inning. The Terps loaded the bases for Paul Jones II, who plated two with a single before Mendez ripped a two-RBI double to give Maryland a 5-1 lead. Maryland had five different Terps log multi-hit games and six different Terps scored multiple runs. Brayden Ryan held the Hawkeyes to just three earned runs across his five-inning outing on Sunday afternoon. He worked a pair of clean innings and collected a trio of strikeouts as the first of only two Terps to toe the rubber in the series finale. Lance Williams earned the save with his three-inning effort.
