Box Score COLUMBUS, OH – The #7-seeded University of Maryland women's tennis team defeated the #2-seeded USC in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament 4-2!
This is the first time Maryland (18-6 overall) has made it to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, and additionally, the highest-ranked win for the Terps since 2013, when they beat #11 Duke.
The team's 18 wins are tied for the most in a single season in school history. Maryland went 18-7 in 2022.Â
The Terps will face No. 3 seed Michigan in the Big Ten Semfinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. The match will air on B1G+.
In the doubles round, the Terps earned the point after winning the first two doubles matches, 6-3 and 6-2!Â
In singles, the Terps got huge victories from courts 4 and 6 by
Diya Challa and Tata Gagoshdize; meanwhile,
Ema Kovacevic won her tiebreaker in set #1 10-8! While
Oliwia Orlinska and
Magdalena Baniak fell, the score stood at 3-2 Maryland.
Up 3-2, it all came down to
Emma Ghirardato in the third set, and
Ema Kovacevic up one set.
To clinch,
Ema Kovacevic won her second set with ease, winning 6-2, and sending the Terps to the Semifinals.
Emma Ghirardato's match went unfinished and the match was called after the clinch.
With this victory, this is the first time since 1998 that the Terps will play in a conference semifinals, when they did as members of the ACC.
