Maryland scored the final five runs of Friday’s series-opening thriller.

COLUMBUS, OH — Maryland fell to Ohio State, 10-8, as the two squads opened their three-game weekend series on Friday night. The Terps pushed five runs across in the eighth inning, but their comeback came up short as they fell to 13-16 (2-8 Big Ten) on the season.

Maryland scored three of the game's first four runs. Brayden Martin and Ty Kaunas recorded back-to-back hits with runners in scoring position to open a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Kaunas tacked a sacrifice-fly onto his statsheet in the fourth.

Maryland loaded the bases before an out was recorded in the eighth, sparking a five-run frame as the Terps tried to work back into the contest. Jordan Crosland roped a three-RBI double and Jackson Sirois plated him and Paul Jones II with a double of his own.

Evan Smith got the start on the hill and only allowed three earned runs across his season-high 5.2 innings of work. Maryland only used three pitchers in the loss, but left 13 runners on base in a game full of opportunities.

The Buckeyes (15-13, 5-5 Big Ten) pulled away in the late innings. Ohio State plated five runs in the seventh inning, three of which came on a Maddix Simpson home run. The Terps get another crack at the Buckeyes on Saturday as the weekend series rolls on.
