Washington threw for 347 yards as the Terps won their nation-leading 20th consecutive non-conference game.

EAST HARTFORD, CT — The Maryland Terrapins moved to 2-0 in 2026 with a commanding 38-14 win over Connecticut (1-1) on the road on Saturday afternoon. The win extended Maryland's non-conference winning streak to a nation-leading 20 games.

Maryland quarterback Malik Washington dazzled with 347 passing yards on 34-41 passing and a career-high 82.9% completion percentage (the fourth-highest mark in program history), while new targets Na'eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding (130 yards, eight receptions, one touchdown) and Chris Durr Jr. (103 yards, 10 receptions, one touchdown) became the first two Terps to record 100+ receiving yards in the same game since 2023. Washington completed a program-record 18 consecutive passing attempts in the win. The Terps also rushed for 125 yards and three touchdowns as they improved to 4-1 all-time against Connecticut.

The Terps used two masterful drives in the second quarter to take their first lead while holding Connecticut scoreless. A nine-play, 92-yard touchdown drive preceded a 15-play, 91-yard march that Sean O'Haire capped off with a chip-shot field goal. The two drives chewed up nine minutes of clock in the second quarter and gave Maryland a 17-7 to take into the break. Washington threw for 209 yards in the first half, marking his fourth career game with more than 200 in the first half.

Maryland's defense was stout on Saturday, limiting the Huskies to 14 points — the only points scored against the Terps all season — and forcing a fumble in the first half. Connecticut punted six times as Maryland held an 18th straight opponent to under 300 passing yards (156). Maryland is back in action at home against Virginia Tech on Sept. 19.

How it Happened:
1st Quarter:

After Connecticut won the coin toss, Maryland started the game on offense.
Derrick LeBlanc came up with a sack on 3rd-and-2 to force a Connecticut punt on the Huskies' first drive.
Connecticut opened the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown pass with 4:39 left in the quarter.
Washington's 60-yard touchdown to pass got the Terps on the board with 3:24 on the clock. O'Haire's extra point tied the game at 7-7.
Zion Elee's first career sack forced a fumble, which was recovered by DD Holmes, giving Maryland the ball back at midfield.
The two teams sat tied at 7-7 after 15 minutes of action.

2nd Quarter:

Harry Dalton III capped off a nine-play, 92-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run as Maryland took its first lead midway through the quarter.
The Terps forced Connecticut into punts on back-to-back drives while conceding 30 total yards.
A 10-yard rush from Iverson Howard on 4th-and-1 extended Maryland's drive late in the half.
O'Haire's 18-yard field goal in the final seconds gave Maryland a 17-7 lead at the half.

3rd Quarter:

Maryland's first drive of the third quarter went 71 yards in 10 plays as Howard punched in a one-yard touchdown run. O'Haire's extra point gave Maryland a 24-7 lead midway through the quarter.
The Huskies responded with a 39-yard passing touchdown, cutting Maryland's lead to 24-14 with 5:30 to play.
Washington and Abdul-Rahim Gladding connected for 24 yards to move the chains late in the quarter.
Dalton III punched in his second touchdown of the afternoon to put Maryland ahead 31-14 with 1:53 left.
The Terps led 31-7 entering the final 15 minutes.

4th Quarter:

Bryce McFerson pinned Connecticut at its own 1-yard line with a perfect punt.
Durr Jr. hauled in his first touchdown as a Terp to extend the lead to 38-14 early in the quarter.
Washington scrambled for a 1st down to extend a late drive.
The Terps closed out their 38-14 win to move to 2-0.

Cruising Through Connecticut:

Saturday marked the fifth all-time meeting between Maryland and Connecticut in a series that dates back to 1942.
The Terps improved to 4-1 all-time against the Huskies and 2-0 under head coach Michael Locksley. Maryland has won each of the last three games in the series.
The Terps are 2-0 on the road in the series. Maryland's largest win in series history was a 50-7 victory in 2024.

Washington was 34-for-41 for 347 yards and two touchdowns against the Huskies on Saturday.
His 82.9 completion percentage (34-of-41 marked a new career high and was the fourth-highest single-game number in program history. His mark is the best since Billy Edwards Jr. set the school record with 87.5 (28-of-32) vs. Villanova in 2024.
Washington completed 18 pass attempts in a row from late in the first half until the final minutes of the game. The 18 completions in a row at the most ever by a Terp. It is the longest streak in the Big Ten since Michigan State's Aidan Chiles completed 20 in a row last Oct. 18.
Washington moved to 15th in Maryland career passing yards with his 347-yard game, bringing his career total to 3,496. He moved ahead of Dick Shiner (3,410 from 1961-63), Billy Edwards Jr. (3,317 from 2022-24), Shaun Hill (3,159 from 2000-01), and Bob Avellini (3,222 from 1972-74). Next on the list at No. 14 is Stan Gelbaugh (1981-85) with 3,659.
Washington moved to 12th in Maryland history in career completions with 326. He passed Perry Hills (314 from 2012-16), Billy Edwards Jr. (311 from 2022-24), and John Kaleo (305 from 1991-92). Next on the list is No. 11 Scott McBrien (2002-03) with 335.
The Maryland quarterback recorded his sixth career game with 250+ passing yards, his sixth with 25+ completions, and his fourth with two or more passing touchdowns.
Washington's 10 first-quarter completions were most for a Maryland quarterback since Billy Edwards Jr. had 12 in the first quarter against Villanova on 9/21/2024.
- The last Terp quarterback with 10 completions in a first quarter on the road was Taulia Tagovailoa at Indiana on 10/15/2022. Washington and Tagovailoa's 10-completion first quarters are the only two 10-completion first quarters on the road in the last 10 years of Maryland football.
Washington's 113 first-quarter passing yards marked the first time he's thrown for 100+yards in the first quarter of a road game in his career. He became just the second Terp quarterback with 100+ passing yards on the road in the first quarter. Tagovailoa did it five times from 2020-23.
Malik's 348 passing yards after three quarters marked his second-highest such mark in his career (378 against Michigan State on 11/29/25). They were also the most by a Maryland quarterback through three quarters of a true road game since Taulia Tagovailoa had 365 at Rutgers on 11/25/2023.
