The Terps are back in action against UCLA next weekend.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The Terps suffered their first defeat of the season, 35-26 to Virginia Tech, on Saturday night at a sold-out SECU Stadium. Maryland (2-1) fell to its first non-conference opponent since 2019, ending its nation-leading 20-game non-conference winning streak.

Chris Durr Jr. had a career night with 12 receptions for 109 yards and two touchdowns as he and Dorian Fleming (six receptions, 72 yards) both surpassed the 1,000 career receiving yard mark. Durr Jr. also became the only Terp this century to log consecutive 10-catch games. He became just the third Terp in the past 30 years with over 12 receptions, over 100 yards, and two scores, joining DJ Moore and Torrey Smith.

Malik Washington threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns on the night. Kaleb Webb hauled in a career-high 98 yards on five receptions. Daniel Wingate led the Terps defense with 12 tackles. Washington threw a pair of touchdown passes in Maryland's 12-point fourth quarter, but 445 total yards from Virginia Tech, and a 10/16 mark on 3rd down, helped the Hokies improve to 3-0 on the season. Maryland opens Big Ten play next week as the Terps host UCLA.

How it Happened:
1st Quarter:

Maryland won the coin toss and deferred, sending Virginia Tech on offense first.
The Hokies opened the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown pass on the game's opening drive.
Washington connected with Webb for the Terps' first 1st down of the game.
Nahsir Taylor delivered a red-zone sack.
Virginia Tech led 7-0 after 15 minutes of action.

2nd Quarter:

Hokies quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer rushed for an 18-yard touchdown to extend the VT lead. Maryland blocked the extra point to keep the score at 13-0.
Washington connected with Webb for a 44-yard completion, setting the Terps up on the 1-yard line. Iverson Howard punched in the touchdown to get Maryland on the board with 12:31 left in the half.
The Hokies responded with a 49-yard touchdown pass to extend its lead to 20-7.
Washington connected with Durr Jr. for a 17-yard completion to extend the Terps' drive midway through the quarter.
Washington found Fleming for a 19-yard connection to move the chains late in the half.
Durr Jr. hauled in a 12-yard touchdown reception to cut the deficit to 20-14 with 2:11 left in the half.
Virginia Tech scored a late touchdown to take a 27-14 lead into the break.

3rd Quarter:

The Hokies struck first with an 11-play scoring drive.
The Terps' defense forced a three-and-out midway through the frame.
Virginia Tech led 35-14 after three quarters.

4th Quarter:

Washington connected with Fleming for a two-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter.
Washington hit Na'eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding for a 43-yard completion.
Durr Jr. hauled in another 13-yard touchdown reception to cap a nine-play, 80-yard drive.
The Hokies closed out their 35-26 win.

Washington threw for 359 yards (30/43) and three touchdowns against the Hokies on Saturday night.
The Maryland quarterback recorded his seventh career game with 250+ passing yards, his seventh with 25+ completions, his fifth with two or more passing touchdowns and his third with three passing touchdowns.

Washington moved to a tie for 12th in career touchdown passes with three in the game for 23 in his career. He passed Dick Shiner (21 from 1961-63), Brian Cummings (22 from 1994-97) and Jack Scarbath (22 from 1950-52) to tie Alan Pastrana (23 from 1965-68). Next on the list is Dan Henning (24 from 1985-87).
He became the first Terp with back-to-back 300-yard games since Taulia Tagovailoa in 2022.
