Balanced Attack Lifts Women's Basketball to 76-61 Win Over Loyola

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Led by senior Crystal Washington's 14 points and 10 rebounds, Maryland had five players in double figures en route to a 76-61 victory over Loyola on Wednesday night in women's basketball action at Comcast Center. Freshman Shay Doron contributed 14 points as well to tie for the game high.

Trailing 4-3 early in the game, the Terps (6-1) responded by going an 11-0 run to go ahead 14-4. Five different players scored during that span as the Terps never trailed the rest of the way.

Keyed by five points from Loyola's Lauren Troupe, the Greyhounds (3-3) came to within 21-20 with 4:36 left in the first half after trailing 20-11. But junior Anesia Smith's (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) bucket with less than two minutes to play in the period capped a 13-2 Maryland run, giving it a decisive 12-point lead, 34-22. Maryland's biggest margin of the half came with 18 seconds left, 39-26, but Loyola's Robbyn Poole hit a free throw bring the lead back to 12 at the break, 39-27.

Sophomore Charmaine Carr (Accokeek, Md./Gwynn Park) scored all nine of her points in the first half, tying with Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) for the game high at the half. Carr also had six boards.

The Terps scored six unanswered points to open the the second half, taking a commanding 45-27 advantage and forcing Loyola to take a timeout with 18:14 left in the game. Troupe hit a jumper coming out of the timeout, but Washington (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara) scored two points and freshman Kalika France (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) hit a three-pointer which gave Maryland its first 20-point lead of the game, 50-29.

The Greyhounds never got closer than 11 with 4:48, but Maryland pushed the lead back up in the closing minutes to end the game by the final margin of 76-61.

France finished with 12 points and Smith added 10. Sophomore Chrissy Fisher (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) scored 11 points to round out the double-figure scorers.

Lindsay Cobb and Krystle Harrington both had 13 points to lead Loyola.

Maryland extends its win streak over Loyola to five games, improving its series lead to 11-3.

No. 20/18 Virginia Tech hosts the Terps on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m.
