COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
#19/21 Maryland women's basketball posted its largest victory in five years, cruising to a 91-42 win over St. Bonaventure on Tuesday night at Comcast Center. Sophomore Shay Doron had a season-high 25 points to lead five double-digit scorers as the Terps extended their win streak to four games.
Freshmen Laura Harper (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) and Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro), who were selected ACC Rookies of the Week in back-to-back weeks, posted their third double-doubles of the young season. Langhorne netted 12 points while Harper added 10. Each hauled down 10 boards.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the first half, the Terrapins (6-1) rolled off a 19-0 run, jumping out to a 23-4 lead which the Bonnies (2-4) could not overcome. Langhorne tallied six points during that span.
After allowing Xavier to shoot almost 46 percent from the floor in the Terps' 74-72 victory last weekend, Maryland put on a defensive clinic, limiting St. Bonaventure to five field goals and just 19.2 percent shooting for the half. After Mandi Pierce's shot tied the score at 4-4 with 16:32 on the clock, SBU did not make another basket until 1:03 was left in the period.
Holding a 38-17 lead at the halftime buzzer, the Terps gradually built its lead and put the game away in the second period. Maryland was almost 61 percent from the field in the second half, making 6-of-11 three pointers. Freshman Ashleigh Newman (Shelbyville, Tenn./Shelbyville Central) was 3-for-4 from behind the three-point arc in the half, en route to a season-high 11 points. Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) scored 15 of her 25 points in the final 20 minutes.
Junior Charmaine Carr (Accokeek, Md./Gwynn Park) contributed six points, four boards and three assists off the bench. Sophomore Aurelie Noirez (Vandoevre, France/Lycee FrancoisArago) had seven rebounds, tying a career high. Senior Anesia Smith (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) dished out seven assists and had eight points in the win. All 12 Terrapins saw playing time in the win.
The Terps controlled the paint, once again, outscoring the Bonnies, 40-14. Maryland also forced 27 turnovers, scoring 34 points on those opportunities.
No player on the St. Bonaventure roster reached double digits. Maripier Malo had a team-high nine points in the losing effort. Stefanie Collins, who was averaging 12 points per game, was held scoreless but had seven rebounds.
The win is the biggest for Maryland since Dec. 29, 1999, when the Terps defeated Brown, 98-47. The Terps' 81 field goal attempts (making 38 for 46.9 percent shooting) are the most since Nov. 29, 2002. The Terps were 45-for-86 in the 104-66 win over Rider.
Maryland remains home for the next four games. The Terps host Monmouth on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m., followed by Coppin State on Dec. 20 and the Terrapin Classic on Dec. 29-30.
