Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
On the game
I'm just so proud of this team, and what we did tonight. We played like a team. We played unselfishly on the offensive end and the defensive end. This is just a special win for this team and this program, with the adversity we faced. Just look at the rebounding stats. We outrebounded a team that outrebounds their team by ten every game.
Defensive effort
Our game plan going in was we wanted to focus on our defense. Our team executed that tonight. They did a tremendous job, whether it was in our matchup defense or our man-to-man, they did a tremendous job helping each other defensively.
On Shay's performance
Shay just has a tremendous amount of will to win. She stepped up and was extremely competitive. She attacked aggressively, got to the free throw line and stepped up and made big free throws. She was just extremely impressive tonight.
The importance of this game
Every game is big, especially in the ACC. We never really thought about being 0-2. We felt like we didn't really play our best game when we came out at Virginia Tech, and we just wanted to play hard and we did tonight. If we continue to play hard, great things are going to happen for this team.
On the Maryland post players
Every game, Jade Perry gets more confidence, and down low she has stepped up to the challenge. Charmaine Carr and Angel Ross, although they only played six minutes, gave us some very valuable minutes. It's the little things that we're talking about in terms of being a tremendous team.
Maryland guard Shay Doron
On her own performance
The truth is, I didn't even feel like I was scoring a lot. It was so balanced today, and rightfully so. My teammates deserve the credit for my success and for this win. It was not on me by any means, and I was just having fun hitting free throws.
On her composure
We knew they were going to make runs. It's a game of runs, that's basketball. We talked ourselves through it, and were very positive with each other. We definitely didn't play like a young team tonight, I'll tell you that. Everyone was composed, taking good shots. We played like we were all seniors tonight. I think that it's amazing for this program. It's amazing for this team, and this coaching staff.
On teammate Crystal Langhorne
She's so powerful. She can abuse defenses at will. Even sometimes against three players. It's tough to stop her.
Maryland center Crystal Langhorne
On her battle on the boards
I expected them to box me out, to push me out as far as possible. I just had to fight through that.
On what she's been working on offensively
I've just been working on positioning and posting up. I got myself in good position, and kept myself in front.
On motivation going into the game
I don't take personal battles into the game. It's a team game. I know that if I worked as hard as I could, things would just happen.
Maryland forward Jade Perry
On her defense
I was just using more of my body. [Laura] Harper was telling me how to play defense and how to frustrate teams so I was just working on using my body.
On her new role as a starter
I hate that [Laura] Harper is out. I just need to step up and do well.
University of North Carolina quotes:
UNC Coach Sylvia Hatchell
On team's performance
We played no defense or rebounding. (Crystal) Langhorne had a great game and (Shay) Doron, she had a great game too. They had three kids who can score and they all did.
Basically, our defense was non-existent and it was physical play and we just didn't get on the board and rebound like we should have. There were a lot of areas that we did some good things. We had more assists than we did turnovers. But we didn't play defense or rebound. I may change up the starting lineup after this. But it's early still.
On Maryland's performance
They looked great and had a great game. We just have to go back and do a better job next time. Those kids [Maryland players], they were fired up and played great and deserved to win. If you would have told me that this would happen, I would have said `no way.' They played a great game and our defense wasn't there. If I have to suit up myself, it would be different. We learned a lot from tonight and we will go back and regroup.
On the ACC Expansion to 11 teams
The bad thing is that we won't have another chance to play [Maryland]. I think we have the hardest schedule in the ACC, if you look at home vs. away games. Home court in our league is a big thing.
On defending Maryland's post and perimeter players
We've played other great players through the posts and on the perimeter and we've done a really good job on those people and we just didn't do it tonight.
On North Carolina Freshman Erlana Larkin
I thought she would be more effective and she learned a lot. She needs to mix up the package of her moves. Defensively, she learned. I think she was real nervous. She's still pretty tough.
