Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"We had a dominating performance tonight. I was excited to see us play that way for 40 minutes. That is what the challenge has been. We get pleasure coaching this team because they really take it to heart in terms of being able to motivate them. The tremendous thing is looking at the box score and seeing how unselfish each player is. There were six players in double figures and they got it done at the defensive end and on the offensive end."
On Marissa Coleman's play:
"What a special performance out of Marisa. She had the first triple double in the history of the program. She made it look so easy."
On defense:
"I thought we did a tremendous job coming out from the tip and playing hard. They run a really nice motion offense and you have to do a lot of things defensively and we did a tremendous job communicating and really being on the same page tonight."
On Maryland's play:
"This was hands down our best performance of the year. It was exciting because when you challenge this team they really take it to heart. I saw it in practice yesterday and carrying over today that they wanted to get better in reducing our turnovers and making better passes. Being able to see all of it come together tonight was pretty exciting."
Sophomore Marissa Coleman
On her triple double:
"The triple double just snuck up on me. Tonight's game we just wanted to go out and have fun. The speech Coach [Frese] gave us before practice really hit home. She said that this December, we were going to be driven so we wanted to take that to heart and wanted to go out and play a complete 40 minute game. I feel like any of our players could have accomplished what I did tonight. We were just that motivated and that excited to play tonight."
On defense:
"Coming into this season we knew defense and turnovers were areas that we needed to work on. We talked a lot about limiting our turnovers and really bringing it on the defensive end. That really does get you motivated when you get a big stop and then come down and get a score. All we kept saying was get stops on the defensive end."
On Maryland's expectations:
"I just think from the coaching staff all the way down our expectations are so much higher than what we have been playing. We hadn't played a complete 40 minute game yet which we knew we were capable of doing. We showed that tonight. It's a new month and we can start from a clean slate and improving on things."
Junior Laura Harper
On Maryland's play:
"We were not satisfied with where we were. I think we discussed as a team our expectations. We have to fix things up. Everyone is going to give 100% to this team and we just wanted to set the bar a little bit higher."
On scoring 100+ points:
"It is never a goal to score any amount of points. Our goal is to play a complete game all 40 minutes. If we hit 100, great, but if we hit 70 and we play a complete game, then we are happy."
UCSB Coach, Mark Green
On tonight's game:
"It's always interesting when you play the number one team in the country. When looking on tape, you always think that there are weaknesses and things that you can attack, but obviously things did not turn out that way tonight. They were awesome on the offensive boards, an awesome rebounding team."
On Marissa Coleman's play:
"Watching Marissa on tape, she appears to be good, but tonight she was a little bit more than that. She has a lot of court presence for a young player she is very poised and smart. Tonight she was difficult for us to defend because she is so big and strong."
