#1/1 Maryland 86, Marist 60
December 30, 2006
College Park, Md.
Maryland improved its record in the Terrapin Classic to 17-1 overall, winning its fourth straight tournament title.
The Terrapins improve their record to 15-0 on the season, and push their nation-best winning streak to 21 games. The streak began on March 19, 2006, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The winning streak also matches the longest in school history, a 21-game streak from January 10-March 31, 1989.
Maryland forward Marissa Coleman was named the tournament Most Valuable Player. She had 15 points tonight and 28 during the tournament.
Maryland guards Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood and Kristi Toliver were also named to the Terrapin Classic All-Tournament team.
Wiley-Gatewood established a career high point total in the second consecutive game. Her 17 points eclipses her previous high of 15, set last night against UNC Greensboro. She is now averaging 13 points per game in her 3 games as a Terp.
This was the first time this season that Marist has allowed more than 72 points. The Red Foxes, who already have played #3/3 Duke, allowed the Terps to hit 73 points with 7:53 left in the game, when Wiley-Gatewood hit a free throw.
After Marist hit two free throws to tie the score at 12, the Terps went on a 25-6 run to take a commanding 37-18 lead.
Five Terps scored in double figures tonight. Along with Coleman and Wiley-Gatewood, Toliver, Laura Harper, and Crystal Langhorne all registered double-figure points.
For Langhorne, it was the 39th consecutive game in which she has scored 10 or more points.
Langhorne equaled her career high for assists by the end of the first half, with 5. She ended up with 6 assists on the night, establishing a new personal best.
The night after establishing a program record with 12 made 3-pointers, the Terps continued their hot shooting, connecting on 10 of 20 attempts from downtown. Coleman was a perfect 4-4 from three, the second time in 3 games that she had a perfect night beyond the arc (3-3 at Loyola on December 21).
Shay Doron became the tenth player in Maryland history to record 200 steals. She grabbed her 200th and 201st steal in tonight's win.
Doron also had 6 points, moving her to within 8 points of second place on the Maryland all-time list. She now has 1,671 points over her career. Next up is Christy Winters, who had 1,679 from 1985-90.
Langhorne is also closing in on a milestone, moving to within a point of Myra Waters (1979-82) for a spot in the Terrapin's all-time top ten scorers list. Her 11 points tonight give her 1,422 for her career. Waters registered 1,423.
