Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
On Siena
"Siena came out and played really scrappy. They did a tremendous job of being able to play from tip off. We gave Siena a lot of confidence in the first half. Shondaya Burrell had a career day for them. She played a great game."
On first half
"I didn't like how we were evaluating possessions and being loose with the ball. We had too many breakdowns on the defensive ends. Our defense gave up too many dribble drives from the perimeter."
On second half performance
"I am proud of how we came out and responded in the second half. We were much more focused and ready to play. I was pleased with the way we shot the ball and really broke the game wide open, but we need to put together two good halves more consistently."
On Kristi Tolliver
"Kristi does a great job of understanding the flow of the game and understanding when a big shot needs to be made. She has a lot of confidence in her teammates' ability to get her the ball."
On getting every teams best shot
"We understand we are going to get every teams best shot. After ten games we understand we're going be challenged every night."
On upcoming games
"Northern Iowa will be hungry and motivated to play us. We need to come out with more intensity. They will have a tremendous crowd, as will Temple."
Sophomore Guard/Forward Marissa Coleman
On getting every team's best shot
"Tonight you could see in their faces, they were getting more and more excited with every made shot. Last year we snuck up on a lot of people. This year that has not happened. We are the National Champions and we know to expect every team's best performance."
Siena Head Coach Gina Castelli
Opening Statement:
"We ran out of gas a little bit but they are just a great team to keep up that intensity for 40 minutes. It was going to be a little difficult for us to keep up. They got to the line a lot more in the second half. We didn't, and that hurt us quite a bit."
On playing Maryland:
"The way we looked at it was that it was a great opportunity to play a team like Maryland. They have gotten better and better every year. We just told our kids to play with their hearts. Talent wise they have more talent but you never know the size of someone's heart. We just said just give it your all and see what happens."
On Marissa Coleman:
"She is just a very difficult person to defend because she is so versatile. She can post up. In the second half she was really taking it to the hoop and getting it to the line and that hurt us quite a bit. Their whole team is incredible so it's hard to just pick out one but she stepped it up a lot in the second half and that helped them quite a bit."
On Maryland's offense:
"Offensively they are just so hard to defend. It is not just one or two people. Any of the people that can go in, even off the bench, can hit shots. They are just a machine. They shot 70% in the first half and 63% in the second and we were feeling that we were doing a good job but they are just such a threat offensively."
