Maryland Quotes

Maryland head coach Brenda Frese
On Maryland's performance:
"This is a special win for us. We talked about having twice as much fun and I think we worked twice as hard in this game. I'm so proud of the champions we have in this locker room. We just played a tremendous game against such a talented team as LSU."

On containing LSU's Slvia Fowles:
"[Sylvia Fowles] tries to get really low in the paint, so we tried to be very active defensively to make her work hard to get any post up that she got. Jade [Perry], [Laura] Harper, and Drey [Mingo] really battled there. They doubled and made it as difficult for her as possible. Our presence defensively both in the post and on the perimeter was really the difference in this game."

On Kristi Toliver being named MVP:
"The Wizards, they have Agent Zero [Gilbert Arenas], well we have Two Zero [Kristi Toliver]. The way she plays, you can see what makes her so special. How she leads this team, we fed off her energy during this tournament. The way she comes out, her mindset, the toughness that she displays, not only her ability to hit the open shot but the fact that she runs the offense for this team and puts our players in position to be successful."

On Playing without Crystal Langhorne:
"I think it goes to show that we have a team of All-Americans. And the way that we step up and play, it's not about any one individual player, but how we play collectively as a team. I look down our roster and every game someone different is stepping up with different momentum. Marissa [Coleman] didn't score a lot of points tonight but she stepped up and got eleven boards. You could go through our stats and see our unselfishness as a team."

On Jade Perry:
"I don't see Jade as filling in for anyone. She's holding her own. She has made tremendous strides. Obviously, you see the strength and power she brings to the post, and the confidence she brings to the game. She has worked extremely hard to get herself to this point and she's the strongest post player in the country, I don't care what anyone says. Playing with what she has and the confidence she brings makes us that much better as a team.

Maryland Guard Kristi Toliver
On team's performance:
"We're going to continue to come out with a lot of energy and fire. We try to play consistent. The only team that's going to beat us is ourselves. We tried to play hard the entire game."

On teammate center Jade Perry:
"To tell you the truth, I didn't know that [Laura] Harper was out of the game until three minutes left in the half. Jade just stepped up and did a great job. She just came in and dominated the second half."

Maryland Forward Laura Harper
On foul trouble and center Jade Perry's performance:
"Honestly, I didn't play much in the first half due to foul trouble. I just tried to provide some energy for Jade. She held it down she played for twenty minutes without a sub in the first half. I wanted to give her a real boost because she held it down for the post players."

LSU head coach Van Chancellor
On Maryland:
"Give Maryland all the credit in the world. [Kristi] Toliver was just outstanding. I thought I was in a WNBA game the way she was making shots."

On Maryland guard Kristi Toliver
"I thought the player that really created some real problems for us was Toliver. I was really impressed with her. Her ability to shoot the ball, to dribble and drive, to pull up and shoot. She has the ability to score against pressure."

On Maryland's potential:
"I was impressed with the whole [Maryland] team. Not to be unfair to [Coach Frese] and not to put pressure on them, but this team here is capable of winning a National Championship if they keep playing like this."

On the beginning of the second half:
"[Maryland] played really aggressively. They came out and scored the first four bombs they shot and they were just really confident. When you get on the road, you can't come out and let a team do that to you"

On what LSU learned from the game:
"I think playing this game is exactly what [LSU] needed. Now let's go on home and get to work. That's why we entered this tournament, to see where we are. We found out where we are, now let's go to work"

LSU center Sylvia Fowles
On the changes under first-year LSU coach Van Chancellor:
"To tell you the truth, we haven't changed anything, probably some tweaks, but we haven't really changed anything. We didn't have to adjust to [Coach Van Chancellor]. He made it his business to adjust to us, and that's one of the things that really struck me about him. But basically our LSU offense is still the same."
