Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
On tonight's game:
"I thought we played better tonight. We made another step forward and I really like our defensive intensity and focus. We are getting stronger in the second half and tonight, we held them to 26 points. I like where our focus, our energy and our concentration is. I thought we did a tremendous job being ready to play tonight."
On the team's tempo:
"I thought tonight was another step in the right direction but I still think we can play better. I like when Kristi Toliver and Sade Wiley-Gatewood are pushing our tempo. We're starting to run and starting to get back to our transition play. I thought we did a great job moving the basketball."
On the team's defensive effort:
"Today I thought our defensive energy and intensity brought our offense. Every night we should be able to bring our defense, regardless of shots which shots are falling. I am pleased with the progression we are making."
On post-season play:
"We know the implications of every game and every game counts the same. We will just continue to build on this progression and keep getting better, specifically on the defensive end. Our team is smart enough to know that if we position ourselves in the ACC, we will get a day of rest in the ACC tournament. We're just trying to play one game at a time."
Maryland Guard Kristi Toliver
On her improvement this season:
"I'm trying to compete and get better. I met with the coaches this week and we talked about playing up tempo. I think that showed today when we pushed the ball and found our teammates."
Maryland Forward Marissa Coleman
On improving with each game:
"I got into each game playing where I need to be on the floor. Each game we are trying to go out and make a statement, no matter who we are playing. We made progress on the defensive end and we're still trying to get better."
On the team's defensive energy:
"One of our main focuses in practices is our defensive energy and intensity, and each game we play we are getting better at that. I think by the time the ACC and NCAA tournaments roll around, we're going to be a very good defensive team."
Beth Dunkenberger
On the game:
"We had trouble getting in synch tonight offensively and I give credit to Maryland for that. They are much improved team. Maryland got in our passing lanes throughout the game. They really disrupted us offensively and that resulted in them getting transition opportunities. This was not our best effort."
On their problems:
"We just couldn't get in synch. We had easy shots inside that didn't fall. We couldn't get the ball to bounce our way. Maryland's defense was much improved."
On coming off a victory against Georgia Tech:
"It was frustrating because we played so well against Georgia Tech. We came back from an eleven point deficit against them but tonight we looked disjointed and out of synch. We didn't look like the team we've built over the last few weeks."
On Maryland's offense"
"They have five players on the floor that can shoot the lights out. [Kristi] Toliver got hot coming off screens early. They started pounding the ball in the paint and really attacking us. They hit a few shots and stretched our defense."
On lessons learned from tonight's loss:
"We need to play better against pressure defense. We have to remember what makes our team special, and that's our team chemistry."
Brittany Cook
On the game:
"We didn't play the best we could. Maryland is a tough team. We didn't play too badly; we only lost by 19. We need to stick together and believe in each other."
Kirby Copeland
On coming of a victory against Georgia Tech:
"Coming off the Georgia Tech game, we figured we could play with a team like Maryland. It's very frustrating. I thought as a team we would come in her and compete against Maryland, but that didn't happen."
