The University of Maryland football team will close its 2008 spring season on Saturday with the annual Red-White Game at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium. The contest, which caps off Maryland Day 2008, is scheduled to kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Gates open at noon and admission is free. Terp players will be available from 12:30-1:30 p.m. for an autograph session on the stadium concourse.
The game will be broadcast on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network. Tim Strachan (play-by-play) and Jonathan Claiborne (color) will have the call. For those not able to attend, the game can be heard live on WHFS (105.7 FM) in Baltimore and through Maryland All-Access. The contest will be video streamed live over the internet through Maryland All-Access.
Spring Game Format...
The spring game will pit the Red team vs. the White team under a normal format with four 12-minute quarters. There is also a third team - the Black squad - which features offensive linemen and specialists who are eligible to play for either Red or White. Red and white pinnies will be used for players to switch teams and the quarterbacks will be in yellow jerseys (non-contact).
Terps Scrimmage Twice to Prep for Spring Game...
The Terps opened spring practice on Tuesday, March 25 and Saturday's Red-White Game will be the culmination of 15 workouts over the last five weeks. Maryland has scrimmaged two times thus far, including the final one Saturday. Offensively, senior Jordan Steffy has been the most productive of the quarterbacks in the two scrimmages, completing 23 of 27 passes (62 percent) for 317 yards and one touchdown. Junior Chris Turner, who sits atop the depth chart, has hit on 17 of 33 passes for 140 yards. Senior Rashad Henry has been the top rusher, tallying 138 yards on 28 carries. Sophomores Da'Rel Scott and Morgan Green are No. 1 and 2 respectively, on the depth chart at tailback. Scott had a team-high 92 rushing yards on 10 carries in the first scrimmage (April 12), including a 50-yard TD run. Green had 58 rushing yards on nine carries in the second scrimmage. Junior Darrius Heyward-Bey is expected to headline the receiving corps, but a couple of the younger wideouts have led the team in receptions. Redshirt freshman Torrey Smith has six receptions for 70 yards, while sophomore Emani Lee-Odai has six catches for 61 yards. Senior tight end Dan Gronkowski, who has been utilized mostly in a blocking role the last two years, has been impressive throughout spring ball and posted a team-high six receptions for 50 yards in Saturday's scrimamge. The defense has had an impressive pass rush in the two scrimmages, with 13 sacks in each. Senior Dean Muhtadi has posted 5.5 sacks overall, while junior Jared Harrell has four. Senior LB Chase Bullock has gotten extended playing time with injuries to a number of other linebackers and has produced a team-high 13 stops in the two scrimmages. He also had an interception on Saturday. Sophomore LB Alex Wujciak, who missed all of 2007 with a knee injury, has chipped in with 10 tackles and Alex Schultz has 11. Junior PK Obi Egekeze has been solid, hitting 5 of 7 field goals, with a long of 45 yards.
