Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening remarks:
"Obviously it wasn't a pretty game physically, but the thing I'm most proud of is that fact that, I thought with the adversity of the first half and not being able to buy a basket, I thought in the second half we were able to really rely on our defense and our offensive rebounding. It says a lot about this team, in regards to finding a way to grind out a win in your preseason and your non-conference. Some nights are going to be like that and if we can play the way we did in the second half, good things are going to happen for us. I'm proud of the fact with the adversity we faced in the first half that we were able to respond the way we did in the second half."
On finding a go-to scorer:
"We're still trying to find that. When you feel like some of your consistent players can't buy a shot, who is going to step up and make those shots? We were able to defend until that happens when we can get back into an offensive rhythm and a flow. I thought we did just a great job, collectively, playing great team defense."
On the chemistry of the freshmen:
"I'm really pleased with the freshmen. I think they're just giving us great things. You talk about Diandra [Tchatchouang], just her versatility. The fact that she can shoot the three, she can go inside, she's got strength. [She's] very versatile for us, which I think gives teams a match-up problem. Obviously from Dara [Taylor]'s end, when she comes in, she just brings another level of speed and intensity, makes the game go a lot faster for us in terms of up tempo. Tianna [Hawkins], what she's given us on the offensive rebounding end, on the glass. Essence [Townsend] with her length. Just some great things from this freshman class."
On tinkering with the rotation:
"I think [the rotation] is going to be a work in progress most of the season. I think as we move forward it's going to be based on match-ups, versus scouts and on film. There were some match-ups tonight where they were playing four guards, five guards, that didn't serve obviously Yemi [Oyefuwa] and Essence, so it's going to be based on match-ups."
Sophomore Lynetta Kizer
On taking more of a leadership role this year:
"Last year I was less mature than I am this year. Having five freshmen, I have to watch my every move and make sure I'm smart with it and show them that there's other ways to build back around your game."
Being a veteran:
"It's something I'm looking forward to doing. I'm just trying to be positive."
Freshman Dara Taylor
On how the newcomers are adjusting:
"There's a lot of support. The five of us are growing as a whole and the whole team."
