COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland kept their program-record home court winning streak alive with the school's 45th straight win in College Park with a 76-44 victory over Stony Brook in the first of three games in the Terrapin Classic. Sophomore Lynetta Kizer helped lead the Terrapins with her 12th career and second consecutive double-double.
An extremely productive first half gave the Terrapins a comfortable 20-point lead. In the first 20 minutes two players, Kizer and Diandra Tchatchouang, scored in double-digits, 28 points were scored inside the paint and SBU was forced into 14 turnovers.
Maryland (10-2) took an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of play but Stony Brook (2-9) answered back with a 6-0 run of their own. The Seawolves managed to cut the Terps' lead down to two but Maryland held on throughout the first half. The Terrapins headed to the locker room with a 40-20 advantage over Stony Brook, tying the score for fewest allowed opponent points in the first half.
For over nine minutes Stony Brook was held without a field goal, beginning with just under three minutes left in the first half and extending almost seven minutes into the second. In that time Maryland pushed their lead to 29 points. The Terps took their largest lead at 32 points with a jumper by senior Lori Bjork in the last shot of the game. Bjork finished with 16 points including four treys.
Just seconds into the second half Kizer pulled down her 10th rebound of the game for her double-double. Kizer finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Woodbridge, Va., native had tallied 21 points and 13 rebounds against American in the Terps' first road win of the season just last week.
Three freshmen started the game for the Terps for the first time this season: Tchatchouang, Dara Taylor and Tianna Hawkins. All have started in games before but not all at the same time. Tchatchouang led the game in points with 17 and added seven rebounds. Taylor had another productive game with nine assists and only two turnovers after her 11 assist game against American. Hawkins added six points and pulled down 13 rebounds including nine offensive boards. The Clinton, Md., native has notched double-figure rebounds five times this season, two consecutive.
Maryland was clearly not stunted by the holiday break as multiple players had big games including redshirt-freshman Jackie Nared who recorded a career-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Nared had a perfect first half performance hitting all three of her shots from the field, including one three-pointer, hit both her free throws, grabbed three rebounds, dished out one assist and grabbed one steal.
Stony Brook was the Terps' fifth opponent this season held under 50 points. All but one opponent have been able to score more than 70 points. The Seawolves were also the Terrapins' fourth opponent to turn the ball over at least 20 times.
The Terrapin Classic continues tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET with Stony Brook vs. UNC-Wilmington. Maryland plays again on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. ET against the Seahawks at 7 p.m. ET in Comcast Center to close out the tournament.
Maryland has two more games before they head into conference play, all at home. Tickets for games through the holidays, Dec. 29th (UNC-Wilmington) and Jan. 3rd (Saint Joseph's), are half price. Single-game and season ticket packages are available for purchase online at umterps.com or by calling the Terrapin Ticket Office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
