RV/RV Maryland vs. UNC-Wilmington

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

College Park, Md.  (Comcast Center)

FINAL SCORE: RV/RV Maryland 67, UNC-Wilmington 61

Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening Remarks:

“Tonight was a nice, solid win. I thought we were tested in many different ways with the different runs throughout the game. I’m really proud of the fact that I thought we kept our poise and composure down the stretch especially with the great runs that they made. UNC-Wilmington is a very veteran-led team, I thought they played hard. They were extremely scrappy and there was just a great battle, a great test for us. I’m just proud we were able to come away with the championship tonight.”

On Maryland’s inside presence:

“We, through the timeouts, stressed that we needed to get more post touches and felt like we had a great advantage and we talked about that at halftime. So we definitely wanted to get more post touches. I thought Lynetta [Kizer] did a great job giving us a huge inside presence.”

On preparing for the ACC:

“As we are getting ready to be tested in league play, these are the kind of games [we need]. I told them there was a point in the second half where we could have gone one way or another. I thought we did a nice job keeping our poise and our composure being able to manage the game especially down at the end of the game.”

On Maryland’s outside shooting:
“Credit both Lori [Bjork] and Kim [Rodgers].  They came in and they were ready to play and they were shot-ready. I thought our guards did a nice job finding them, attacking to give them nice looks.”

Sophomore center Lynetta Kizer

On Maryland’s second-half run:

“It was important, just getting out early. We felt like we didn’t play Maryland basketball in the first half. We were giving them a lot of opportunities and they were really looking to just go inside to me and they had confidence in me. And I just wanted to lead them.”

On her scoring:

“I think it is just the way everything played out. Our coaches talked to our players and our players talked within each other and just told them to get the ball inside and just work it there. We’ll go inside out and that is what we really focused on in the second half and we were successful.”

Senior guard Lori Bjork

On adjusting at halftime:

“We came in at halftime and just talked about effort. That is the first thing you have to do, if you are not playing hard than you’re not going to be very effective at anything and that is number one defensively. If you are willing to play hard you can play good defense. I thought that was the emphasis in the second half.”
