COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland 77, Duke 59
Head Coach Brenda Frese
On today's game:
"I'm going to miss this one of these days, when I don't get to be here anymore with these two special seniors. What a game! And what a convincing win, a dominating win. You have Marissa [Coleman], reaching 2000 points tonight, and then Greivis [Vasquez] had 35 yesterday, and [Kristi Toliver] had 34 today. I just love how this team is playing. We are just clicking. Obviously, in the second half I thought we came out really inspired. Our defense and our rebounding led us to start clicking on the offensive end against a really physical and talented Duke team."
On how she motivated the team at halftime:
"It wasn't halftime so much, it was after halftime. I just saw us going through the [motions]. Right before they came over to me I was really fired up, because this is our building. And we were going to come out, we were going to defend, and we were going to be tougher. We were going to play inspired for each other. I was just talking about how we are too talented to just go through the motions."
On Kristi Toliver:
"She was ready from the tip. The rest of the team was 2-for-20 [in the first half], and she just put the team on her back. That is what you do. These guys have done this all season long at different times. In the second half she got Marissa going. We just started clicking on all cylinders. That's what great players do. They make great plays and then they understand when they have got to get their teammates involved."
Senior Guard Kristi Toliver
On playing Duke:
"I always love playing Duke, especially at home on the last time we get to play them in the regular season. We definitely want to take full advantage of it, and I think we did."
Senior Guard/Forward Marissa Coleman
On scoring over 2,000 points in her career:
"It means a lot, but the main thing is that I can credit all of the great players that I have played with since I have been here. Playing along with Kristi, [Crystal Langhorne],[Laura Harper], Shay [Doron]. Playing with Lang opened up so much for me left alone. Playing with great players is why I have been so successful as a player."
On her second half turnaround:
"It's a new half. You have to put the first one behind you. I wasn't happy with the way I played at all the first half. I wasn't there emotionally; I wasn't doing to much. I just told myself at halftime that I wasn't going to come out and just have a better second half. Whether that was defending, rebounding, or scoring."
Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
On today's game:
"Obviously, for us, this was a tale of two halves, extraordinarily different halves, and a very poor showing in the second half. You have to complement the very excellent play of Toliver and Coleman in particular. I don't think I've ever seen a stat sheet with 34 and 24 (points) from two guard spots. That's pretty remarkable and obviously speaks to some pretty nice things that they did and some very, very poor defense that we played in the second half."
On Maryland's post play in the second half:
"They did a good job of posting up Coleman. I think our turnovers were a critical component. However, we turned the ball over the first three possessions of the second half. That was very poor guard play on our part to do that and that fueled their transition. I think once they got a few transition points, then they were able to post up Coleman and she did some nice things inside as well."
On losing control of the game early in the second half:
"I think we just did not execute. I think we did not play sharp and you can't allow that to occur in this type of environment, certainly."
