RV/RV Maryland vs. Boston College

Thursday, January 14, 2010

College Park, Md.  (Comcast Center)

FINAL SCORE: RV/RV Maryland 72, Boston College 65

Head Coach Brenda Frese:

Opening Statement:

“Well if you would have told me that we were going to hold Carolyn Swords to six points today going into this game, I probably wouldn’t have believed that, but I think it’s obviously a credit to where our team is headed. Defensively, I thought we did a tremendous job being able to defend tonight as well as being able to dominate the glass, especially in the second half. I’m just really proud to be able to say that our offense is starting to click. We’re really finding each other. We’re really getting comfortable making plays on the offensive end. It’s fun to watch when we’re clicking on all cylinders like we were tonight.”

On the team’s ability to score more points in the paint than Boston College:

“Our post players did a terrific job running the floor and the points in the paint. We did feel like in transition, that was to our advantage and credit to Lynetta, Tianna, Diandra, in terms of running the floor and to our perimeter play for finding them and being unselfish in terms of establishing that push presence that we needed.”

“Obviously we felt like we wanted to mix it up, which we did early between the zone and the man and then we did a lot of different things in terms of the on-balls. I just thought collectively that our team defense was really good. I thought the lift we got off the bench was Yemi Oyefuwa coming in and being strong and physical, but all our bigs did a tremendous job understanding how important their post defense was going to be tonight.”

On the team’s youth and their ability to play well in the ACC:

“To watch the starting line up and see three freshmen, we’ve got to be one of the youngest teams in the country, but we’ve also talked about, nobody is going to feel sorry for us and we’ve got to come out and play every possession like it’s our last. I think the neat thing right now is what competitors we have in the locker room and seeing these players’ confidence grow in every single game and the comfort level and trust that now is taking place on the floor with this team”

Freshman guard Dara Taylor

On tonight’s game:

“Personally, I think I forced myself early. I got a couple turnovers, but we definitely got our second wind when they let down in the second half. So when they had that let down, we took advantage of it and kept pushing it.”

On how the team feels since the loss to NC State:

“I think we definitely grew up a lot. That was an eye-opener for us, everybody’s first real time out as a team in the ACC and now we see how far we have to come to play every game in this conference and how prepared we have to be to go out and win games in this conference.”

Senior guard Lori Bjork

On guarding BC’s Mickel Picco:

It was a little concerning early. I lost her a couple of times and we launched from the zone…But I thought we did a good job shutting her down a little bit. We were just trying to trail her on every screen and just make her know that there was someone there around every shot.”

On finding her shot in recent games:

Well obviously it’s a lot of practice repetitions that the fans don’t see, but I think more than anything when you have a coach that has confidence in you and you have teammates that are really looking for you, even if I throw up an air ball, people are going to keep saying, ‘Keep shooting Lori,’ so when people give you that type of confidence, it’s easy to shoot”

Freshman guard Diandra Tchatchouang

On bouncing back to have a strong performance after her game at Virginia:

"I’ve gained more composure. I tried to find a way to stop traveling, so I tried to check and work on my game. I feel more confident."

Boston College Head Coach Sylvia Crawley

On today’s game:

“I want to start by giving Maryland a lot of credit, I thought they played hard for 40 minutes tonight and in this conference any given night, anything can happen.  They are a team that rolls up their sleeves and plays hard for 40 minutes and they came out with a win.”

On rebounding from the loss:

“It’s hard to win on the road in the ACC and it appears that the team that is at home has the advantage. We have Georgia Tech on Sunday and we are going to watch some film and come back strong on Sunday.”

Boston College Center Carolyn Swords

On the play of Maryland’s young players:

“Maryland has a great coach and they always play well at home no matter what so we knew this was going to be a tough game. The young players did a great job tonight and that’s why they won.”
