RV/RV Maryland vs. RV/RV Miami

Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010

College Park, Md. (Comcast Center)

FINAL SCORE: RV/RV Maryland 77, RV/RV Miami 80

Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening statement:

“This was a game of possessions. I’m proud of how hard we fought in this game, specifically when you get yourselves down like we did in the first half, but there’s a lot of great lessons for us to learn from this game.”

On defending Miami’s final possessions:

“We really felt like we wanted to stay in zone. I felt like with the flow of the game, in man-to-man, they would just be too difficult to guard.”

On ending the home winning streak:

“Every streak is going to come to an end at some point, but I’m proud of what we’ve created here, when you can look back at all of the talented teams we’ve had in here and beaten. Now it’s time for this team to make a new streak.”

On falling behind early:
“[Miami’s] physicality and athleticism early gave our guard play a tough time, but I thought we got great leadership from Lynetta [Kizer], Lori [Bjork] and Kim [Rodgers] to be able to settle this team down.”

Sophomore Center Lynetta Kizer

On coming back in the first half:

“We had to pull the team together and play Maryland basketball, and I think that’s what Lori [Bjork] and I did.”

On the team’s free-throw shooting:

“The time we spend in practice shooting free throws isn’t enough, and they’re going to be critical in a game, especially a game like this. We’ve got to keep working outside of practice.”

Senior Guard Lori Bjork

On the end of the game:

“Credit [Miami guard Riquna Williams] for the shot, but at the same time, we put ourselves in that position with the slow start, missed free throws, and turnovers. We set ourselves up for it.”

Miami Head Coach Katie Meier

On today’s game:

“That’s a huge win or our program for this particular team of mine, I really couldn’t love a team more. They pretty much talked themselves through that game. They are very smart, and they would tell me what looks they felt like they could get and they would go out there and actually knock down the shots.

On ending Maryland’s home winning streak:

I do want to say how much respect I have for Brenda Frese and this Maryland program. We have a ton of respect for that home winning streak and I am honored that we are the team that snapped it because the way Brenda coaches is the same way I do, we both let our players go out there and play and we coach them up and stay with them. This Maryland team is going to be great and I think they executed well for a young team. I was very proud to be part of this game and I have a special player here who can score six points and 30 seconds and win the game.”

On Miami’s final possession and not calling a timeout:

“I have two of the top scorers in the conference on my team and as long as one of them has the ball I can’t think of a better way to end a game. We have talked about this situation before and I let them know that I would not call a timeout in that situation.”
