COLLEGE PARK, Md.--The Maryland women's basketball team was defeated by a hair Sunday night, 58-57, as they played No. 6 Duke in Comcast Center. Senior Lori Bjork led the Terrapin squad in points with 11.
Although the home team did not get the win, the game was still one for the history books as it was the first ever women's basketball game to be televised in high-definition. Maryland was also a part of the first-ever women's basketball game to be televised (Jan. 29, 1975 vs. Immaculata).
The first points of the game were scored by Maryland, over a minute in to play. Sophomore Lynetta Kizer hit a jumper with 18:40 on the clock. Duke then went on an 8-0 run answered by a 5-0 streak from the Terps. Sophomore Kim Rodgers took the Terrapins on another run of seven straight points bringing them to a tie with Duke, 14-14, with 6:03 left on the clock. The Blue Devils then ended their two-minute scoring drought with a three by Jasmine Thomas. Rodgers followed that with a three of her own to knot the score again.
Maryland held Duke to only 27 points in the first half, the Blue Devils' third lowest number of points scored in the first 20 minutes this season.
The Terrapins trailed 30-25 early in the second half before Kizer made a layup to ignite a 9-0 run that gave the Terrapins their first lead since 2-0.
Duke's Bridgette Mitchell then scored on a putback, and Thomas scored the Blue Devils' next 13 points to make it 45-38.
The lead expanded to 51-40 before Bjork hit consecutive 3-pointers to begin a 14-2 surge that put Maryland back in front.
One minute remained on the clock and Duke was up 55-54 with the ball. With 20 seconds quickly ticking away, Maryland fouled and the Blue Devils' Joy Cheek hit two free-throws. Sophomore Anjale Barrett hit the final shot of the game, a three-pointer, with one second left but Duke led by four after Thomas hit her 20th point of the evening at the charity stripe.
The one point difference was the smallest margin of victory for the top-10 team this season after Maryland forced to Duke into one of their poorest performances of the year from the field, hitting just 32.8 percent.
Maryland and Duke were both tied in rebounds with 42 apiece, which was a first for both teams. The Terps have held the rebounding advantage in all but two games this season. Prior to tonight, Duke had also outrebounded every opponent besides two (No. 2 Stanford and Marquette).
Maryland returns to ACC action against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. ET and remains on the road to face non-conference opponent Longwood in Farmville, Va., on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. ET. The Terrapins will next play at home on Friday, Feb. 5 against Georgia Tech at 8:30 p.m. ET.
