BLACKSBURG, Va. -
Maryland (15-6 overall, 3-4 ACC) defeated Virginia Tech (12-8, 2-4) on the road, 60-44, to break a three-game slide. Senior Lori Bjork led the Terps with her second 20-point performance of the season with a season-high 22 points.
Maryland led at the half, 29-22, after hitting four consecutive three-pointers, three from Bjork and one from freshman Jackie Nared. The Terrapins have recorded four or more treys in their last six games. Sophomore Lynetta Kizer hit just the third three-pointer of her career to kick things off against the Hokies.
Both teams struggled to get points on the board at the start but the Terps managed to hold Virginia Tech to just 21.9 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes of play. Maryland was 12-of-25 from the field for a 48.0 clip.
For almost five minutes at the end of the first half Virginia Tech was unable to hit a field goal, grabbing just five points in that span, all from free throws.
After the Hokies closed in to cut the Terps lead to three at 29-26 at the start of the second half, Kizer made a layup and got the foul with 16:56 left in the game to put the Terrapins up 31-26. After missing the free throw, she grabbed the offensive rebounds to make another layup two seconds later. After a steal from freshman guard Dara Taylor, Bjork cashed in on the assist with a layup. Kizer grabbed another steal and scored again to jumpstart a 9-0 run to put the Terps up by 14 at 40-26. Maryland's largest lead of 16 points came after a layup from freshman Tianna Hawkins, assist Taylor. Taylor dished out nine assists in the win.
Virginia Tech was held to just 29.3 shooting, their third lowest shooting performance of the year. The Hokies were only able to connect on one shot from beyond the arc of their 12 attempts.
Bjork registered double-figure points for the ninth consecutive game. Kizer's 18 points and career-high 16 rebounds gave the Woodbridge, Va., native her 15th career and sixth season double-double. Maryland scored 34 of its points inside the paint, partially in part to the good looks Kizer got from the guards.
Maryland leads the all-time series against the Hokies, 7-5, and holds a 4-2 advantage in Cassell Coliseum. The Terps have won the last five games.
The Terrapins will be taking a quick detour from conference play as they go to Farmville, Va., Sunday, Jan. 31 to take on Longwood. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
