WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
The Maryland Terrapins nabbed a win over Wake Forest on the road using stellar free throw shooting to edge the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The Terps won 70-65 extending their win streak against the Deacs to nine and giving head coach Brenda Frese her 250th career win.
Frese is now seven wins away from her 200th victory as a Maryland Terrapin. She is on pace to hit the 200-win plateau faster than any other coach in Maryland women's basketball history.
Wake Forest's seven three-pointers threatened the Terps' lead in the second half. Maryland was ahead 65-62 with just over two minutes to play. Wake's Tiffany Roulhac missed a free throw and senior Lori Bjork grabbed the rebound. Freshman Diandra Tchatchouang hit the layup to give the Terps a 67-62 lead. But Camille Collier hit her fifth trey of the evening to bring the game within two with 1:33 on the clock.
Neither team would score for the next 60 seconds until freshman Dara Taylor hit a free throw with 32.5 seconds remaining. Three points separated the two teams and the Deacs went for the tie but it was blocked by Maryland's 6-3 Tchatchouang. Freshman Jackie Nared then drew the foul and hit one to make it a two-possession game. Taylor was the last to score for the Terps at the free throw line to seal the 70-65 win.
The lead changed five times in the first half. Bjork hit her first three-pointer of the game as the buzzer went off, ending the first half, to give Maryland the go ahead basket. The Terps went into the locker room with a 29-27 lead.
Despite Wake Forest's efforts from behind the arc, hitting seven three's in the first half, Maryland stayed strong under the basket getting 14 points inside the paint.
The Demon Deacons hit the first four points in the second half. The Terrapins responded with two made free-throws from sophomore Lynetta Kizer and a three from sophomore Kim Rodgers to knot the game at 34-all.
The Deacs kept nipping at the Terps' heels but free throws, what has plagued the team recently, was what gave them the lead. Hitting 17-of-23 in the second half, 14 consecutive, sophomore Anjale Barrett and Bjork combined for five consecutive free throws to give Maryland a 48-44 advantage.
Tchatchouang led the team with 17 points going 8-for-16 from the field and grabbing nine rebounds. Nared also recorded double-figure points with 10, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and pulling down seven rebounds. Maryland nabbed eight steals and blocks.
The Terps return to action this Sunday, Feb. 14 against Clemson in the WBCA Pink Zone game. Tip is set for 2 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcasted live by Terrapins Sports Radio Network.
