Maryland vs. Iona

WNIT First Round
College Park, Md. (Comcast Center)

FINAL SCORE: Maryland 88, Iona 53

Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese

On tonight’s game:

“I thought at first we showed some rust, after being off for two weeks. I thought Iona came out and did a great job shooting the basketball to start, but then we were kind of able to get into the rhythm of their offense and lock down defensively. We started clicking in the second part of the first half, as well as the second half. I just liked the unselfishness that we displayed on the offensive end, just getting so many players involved.”

On the team’s impressive shooting tonight:

“Like I told them, we’ve probably had our best week of practice. We’ve spent a lot of time in the gym, taking shots, so I think that pays off. I thought every single player stepped up and shot the ball with a lot of confidence.”

On what they tried to do against Iona defensively:

“We tried to throw some different wrinkles at them, within different segments of the game. I think part of that was in the first half, we just weren’t ready with how quickly they shot the three and it took us awhile to get into the rhythm. We were able to figure it out a little more in the second half.”

On if the team felt different preparing for the WNIT:

“I don’t think so. It’s competition. I was excited. Anytime you get a chance to challenge yourself and test yourself, especially to be able to play here in Comcast, I was excited. It’s another tournament for us to have the opportunity to be successful in.”

On the team’s bench production tonight:

“It gives us great depth. I just thought the punch that we had with Anjale, Jackie and Tianna – they just gave us a tremendous presence when they were on the floor. To be able to click on all cylinders like that is really important for us.”

Sophomore Lynetta Kizer

On if how the team feels about playing in the WNIT:

“It’s exciting for me and I know it’s exciting for my teammates just as another opportunity to compete and step on to the basketball court. Some people don’t get invited to the WNIT, it’s just exciting for us pretty much. We still have a championship to win.”
