Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement:
"For us, it was a dominating win from start to finish. I love being able to see our team come together for the full 40 minutes. We played with a lot of unselfishness and we were able to dominate on the glass against a very athletic team that is known for its rebounding. We put a complete game together and it was a lot of fun with the atmosphere and the crowd."
On the team's defense:
"Both halves started with our defense and that led to more offense. This team has a lot of youth but it is really coming together. Our defense helped with our transition game. We want to continue to focus on the defensive end."
On the team's free-throw shooting:
"This team has been repping free-throws since Christmas. They come into the gym every day and practice. I told them after the game that it is the little things that we have been doing behind the scenes that are paying off."
On the team's confidence:
"You could see our confidence is at an all-time high. Coming from behind in the Virginia game to get a victory was huge and I could see that in our practice yesterday. We are starting to see this team come together with our confidence level."
On freshman Alicia DeVaughn's performance:
"As a freshman, it is all starting to come together. Alicia was huge in the first half, simply flawless. She did a good job reading cuts and letting the game come to her. She was a huge spark for us tonight."
On the transition game:
"I thought we had great effort in hustling and getting back on defense. Our length gave them a lot of problems tonight. We were able to get a lot of blocks. I told the team in the locker room that we need to stay hungry, but we know that what level we can play at."
Junior Forward Lynetta Kizer
On the victory:
"It feels great. We learned a lot from this game and everyone contributed. We really battled together for 40 minutes and it's a great confidence-builder going into the rest of ACC play. We set the bar tonight and we know what we have to do to maintain that bar."
On the team's rebounding:
"At halftime, coach told us that UNC was going to go harder on rebounds. I told my teammates that we had to put a body on everyone in the second half. We took the mindset that we were down by 20 going out at halftime."
Junior Guard Anjale Barrett
On the team's intensity:
"We are relentless. We knew they were a good team and if we got relaxed, they would come back. We told our teammates to keep pushing and we did a good job of that today."
Freshman Center Alicia DeVaughn
On her teammates' support:
"It was a great confidence-booster for me. I felt like I was supported by my teammates, so it was my turn to support them."
On beating North Carolina:
"That's just great. We all feel great and love it."
North Carolina Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell
Opening Statement:
"I look at the stat sheet and I see that we had 17 steals and they had 28 turnovers and you would think that we could have turned those into points more, but we didn't."
"Of course the biggest thing was the rebounding. We didn't get off to a good start and I thought we had a couple of runs out there. Maryland is very good; they're big and very physical. I'm not saying they are dirty, I am just saying that it was physical. It was an extremely physical game. In fact, I think I have been to some boxing matches that weren't quite as physical as it was out there tonight but that is how the game is right now...Maryland is big and they have a great team. They go to the boards hard."
"I thought we made some runs at them. We got quite a few penetration lay-ups that we missed and wheter it was bodies in contact or whatever, but we didn't finish those off and make them."
On missing senior forward Jessica Breland:
"We probably missed her scoring more than her rebounding because Jessica is a great shooter and has a great touch around the basket. She probably would have gotten some rebounds. She probably would have given us eight or 10 rebounds and maybe 15 points or so. We especially missed her when [Laura] Broomfield got into trouble early. She picked up those fouls early and we had to take her out and then we were a little bit smaller. I started to put both the big girls in there at the same time, but there is no doubt that we missed her."
On being out-rebounded:
"It's big because we take a lot of pride in our rebounding. I tell them all the time that rebounding isn't about size or speed but that it's about heart. Sometimes people get rebounds because they are a little big bigger but when you are smaller you have to put bodies on people, block them and box them out because you are not going to jump people that are bigger than you."
Senior Guard Italee Lucas
On tonight's game without Jessica Breland:
"It was definitely different. Jessica's presence does matter and it was a lot to take on at the time. Hopefully she will get back soon. Her presence makes a difference."
On Laura Broomfield playing in the second half:
"Laura did a good job even though she got into foul trouble a little early. She made a difference."
